Just thinking. Keeping control of the low end, is there a need for a sub? In trance we are working with a lot of lows but i cannot say i have seen any artist studio with a sub yet.
No standard speaker like dynaudio, adam, genelec etc. goes down to those freq.

Is this a matter for the one doing the mastering?

Mackie HR824s owner here. They go down to 37hz. I don't need a sub, cause I know how much sub I need in there in order for my tunes to sound good on a P.A. and that came from experience after playing a few gigs.
Other than that, there are ways to tell if your subs are out of control even if you can't hear them very well. Look at the driver excursion for the level you're listening to, feel the desk your speakers are on...etc. I my first studio I could tell if the subs were too much by how much my windows would rattle

In an acoustically treated room, a sub is not bad. Its also not a necessity, imo.

Peace out.

depends the monitors and the room you are in, you can t fix what you don t hear, in a good room a sub is always welcom to check your mix and then bypass it if you dont need it for mixing , it s a other good reference when setup carfully.
in the room i was before i didn t need one but in this room it was a must , i tried all position in the room + acoustic treatment, the low end just fade or have some peaks ..i choosed a place where it fade + the sub and it was the solution.

lack of bass and clarity there is a real problem ,sub can help a lot, also it become a must have for sound engeeiners cause lot of listeners use and love subwoofers for all modern music , if your track sux with a sub, they won t even listen to it twice.

it seems to me on these sytem and the guys having subs like more tight controlled bass other the bass heavy stuff, even well produced dnb have tight controlled lowend, it can really cut more than too much bass,i see with friends that have sub in cars when pushing the sub it means the tracks is well mixed and thats what they like, too push their sub on track that can handle it , bad mix can t go loud on these sytem and sound good at same time.

sometimes it s even the tracks that dont sound that great that will sound the best when played loud on these sytem. when you don t hear much under 50 hz you can really know all this and might be surprised when listening your track on sytem with big woofers.it can be night and day with what you hear in your room

so true. even if the sub is installed with small monitors (5" bass speaker) and the room isn't treated you'll probably end up with loads of bass freqs flying all over the place completely messing the balance of the track. it would be really hard to mix.
