Do you use reverb at all?

Hi,

since i started producing trance i went throught 3 opinions about reverb!

1) At first i wouldn't use any reverb mostly because i didn't know how to use it properly

2) then i discovered reverb and the effect it had on most instrumenst: made the elements blend better and gave them a sense of "presence" or being real/unreal

3) TODAY, i gave up almost interely on reverb and i try to make my patches sound good enough to not have any reverb

When talking with at least another producer he said today's music was becoming less and less "reverbed" as audiences wanted dryer sounding stuff.

Still i can hear some reverb in current releases, mostly with short decay times, usually one or other lead has more reverb to give it a diferent presence and so...

what's your opinion?

i believe most of you use reverb extensively because i read a lot of discussions here about it... but what do you think about this matter?

thanks,

I use a lot of reverb.

All sounds i use have reverb, except kick, bass and sometimes some drums.

Long reverbs are nescary to create a deep atmosphere.

I could'nt imagine to use no reverb.            Signature

fingax... ok ok... maybe i'm just not being wise in it's use...

eyb... not saying that you're doing anything wrong, off course, you should try to steer a bit away from it, i think you'll notice that it's not 100% needed... i think           roll a joint or STFU :)

Thats the point. For me it is needed. I don't like the sound dry. Just a little touch of reverb can do magic            Signature

i think not using reverbs is like not using delays... impossible!           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

actually there's some reverb on the snares, i think!

maybe i've overdone the delay here, but i see no need for more reverb (i'll try to kill the snare reverb)...

thanks,

the reverbset is very important.
but you can also destroy a lot with it.
for drums and hats i prefer tiny rooms, textures big ones and synth medium.
xdream where the first one who made a bass from the reverb of a kick (peters hoover)

When I started writing, I had no clue what reverb was either... I tend to go back and forth about using reverb, but I end up using it on most of my drums (small room)
and I route my sfx and pads to a pretty large reverb, and depending on the synth I'll route them to a reverb...

The biggest thing that made a difference for me about using reverb is having the reverbs on sends and sending just enough to get the effect you want out of it... I have had bad experiences with putting the reverb as an insert... and reverbing vocal samples works like a charm!           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

hmmmm... reverb in insert is a matter of using very low amounts because modern effects units mix the original dry with the wet one, like sendnig to an aux would.

and you're right, FX on vocal samples rocks

some types of instruments also have to have some kind of reverb because our ears are so used to it that it may sound fake if there's no reverb on it, like electric guitars (wich i rarely use).

One should remember that reverb and delay are actully one and the same theoretically.

Reverb is just a smearing of delays that are so close together that the time between them is indistinguishable. Basic room acoustics, sound bouncing off walls.

Essentially reverb and delay are use to position a sound in space, it is up to your artistic conception and intention and goal with your track as to how you want to place your sounds in the soundfield.

(delay is also used to create counter-rhythms of course)

Recently i've noticed how amazing small rooms sound on hats and snares when done right. It just places the sound in the mix pocket so damn well.

Reverb abuse is also nice to create a super smeared sound that doesnt exist in reality but sounds really cool in a track

And don't forget that you can do interesting thigns to the verb return, like automate/sweep a notch filter over it. I've heard a son kite track that does that, this can be a REALLY cool effect!!

I think that's another great creative tool, applying fx and compression to sends themselves. with practice you can get SUPER fine control over your sound and mixes, and do really interesting things.

One trick i like is to send a delay send to another delay to get strange delays.....
