generally i dont tune my hats but sometimes my snares.
for that i load it in a sampler (f.e. kontakt/halion) and play some keys and look in which key it sounds best according to the bass keynote.

i dont tune but i look for hihats and precussions that sound good with the kick and bass.
i just dont like samplers i prefer editing in audio
but thats me, alot of artists tune in the samplers you just have to tweek the tune until it sounds right

sometimes i use the audio to midi function of Melodyne for drums. in Melodyne you can see then in the piano-roll in what notes the drums are, and transpose a little according to what i want.

i choose one that fits , then try to adjust more.. better or worse ? then choose the better one
how?
fruity loops sampler. so simple i dont bother to think of more ways to do it . im not sure if im after actualy "tuned" percussion , more then nice not annoying frequency (last couple of months it seems all freqs are nasty hehe .. is it me or there is so much dirt on high end of almost evry hihat/crash/snare sample ?)

I tune everything. The way I see it music is entirely based on profound mathematical ratios.

Of course... you can make excellent music without even thinking about underlying mathematical principles... But it's much easier if you can understand them and instead of browsing simply tune any sound you like in a matter of seconds without frustrating "trial and error" tweaking.

When we think of sound as white and black keys we fail to see the mathematical essence of harmony.

This is just IMO... of course!           "It occurred to me by intuition, and music was the driving force behind that intuition. My discovery was the result of musical perception"

@ shamantrixx: actually, the modern equal temperament musical 12-note system we use today is not entirely based on profound mathematics, but is an adapted, watered down version that is easier to transpose.

hit hats are inharmonic sounds. they are not like a square osc with perfect harmonics.... even if you wanted to you couldn't tune them "perfect"...

so i must go with the ones that said they chose one that sounds nice, regardless of tuning issues.

yep...no tunes for hihats ! They are fundamental elements in a track so they must be clear audible in the song and not integrated completly in this.
Hihats use a lot of high freqs so, I think it is better to keep them not tuned, so they will not affect the hi freqs of other instruments.

And another thing..those who studied musical composition will know than when we build a song we basicly buit two songs in the same time(the "rhythm" part and the "melody" part) wich in music composition those are defined as the "apollinic & dionisiac" (dunno the english words for this). Anyway, this 2 different parts are joined together using the contrapunct principles, so the mathematic tunning method will work only inside of each part but not between the parts.

For example: many drummers are tuning their drums, but they never tune their drums after the bassist or the quitarist !

Sorry for my bad english !

I never been in a concert where the drummer tune his hats...hehe
hats dont have tone that needs to be fit in the scale of the track. its for rythem not melody.
use hat thats sounds good! i dont care if you can multyply their rate by 3.14 or other math stuff..
