I am new to the actaul reality of doing a live set and I was wondering this question. As I have always been actracted to the spontanious nature of a party and as a dancer have like the belief that the music is barely in front of us and if get far enought into it we can actual get ahead of it. When talking to some of the artist about earthdance they told me how they'd already planned their sets. I thought this a bit sad ebing earthdance and all. Is this normal do the artists here practise a set before they play and have all the records ect planned out the before. Please confide I am interested to know.

I personally plan around 2 hours into the set and wing it afterwards. I guess preparing a set before hand for a couple of hours helps some people including the DJ get into it. Afterwards, once you know what people want to listen to you can choose tracks which they will like. I done this in Amsterdam last time and I did enjoy the act of choosing tracks etc during the gig.

That depends...

When I do a live set, I am kinda anal retentive about how the tracks change between each other. Since I write my music with the idea of it being mixed, I have a point where the basslines are supposed to change from the previous song to the next song. Now I always have stuff that I throw in on the fly, like new leads, new drums fx etc, but I know what songs are supposed to go when and how ahead of time. It's the perfectionist in me.

When I first started djing, I planned a good majority of my sets and selected my tracks carefully for the crowd that I was expecting and the time that I was playing. I had gotten some really good results from that, untill I went to play a set and the djs before me played a good half of what I wanted to play. So rather than playing the tracks again, I went off the cuff. This is what I do now for dj sets, but sometimes the results aren't as rewarding as knowing how each track is going to flow into each other mixwise beforehand.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

We don't plan our live sets beforehand, either with OOOD or Voice of Cod. The way we play out makes this possible though, and I know that many artists don't have the luxury of being able to be so spontaneous with their performances.

As for DJing, I never plan a set in advance, although I've danced to some stunning DJ sets that I know have been meticulously prepared well ahead of time           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

cool very interesting seems merits for both, I try to put as little thought into if you know what I mean. Let the higher being take control. find it hard lattely though, the more I think about playying in front of people the more I think about it. practice I guess is the answer, I don't want to be a superstar or any thing just to be able get some party's going around my neightbourhood.

We play back basic mixes using Traktor or Ableton, and improvise over the top with keyboards, percussion (electronic and acoustic), guitar (sometimes) and samples/general wierdness. Since there are 4 of us on stage it makes it possible for every set to be totally different.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Hi Colin

you do not plan your live acts?
when you go on stage, you and the rest of the members of OOOD do not know which tracks you are going to play and in which order?

you can improvise in the synths you use and when you use them but there must be some kind of stuctured sequence of the live performance as kick and bass and most drums are not played live.
can you share with us the techniques u use for that?

Like I said, we play the basic mixes (basically the whole track) off Traktor or Ableton and improvise over the top. Although we sometimes plan a set as we're waiting to go on stage, we quite often have no idea what we'll play after the first track, which can make for some amusing on-stage discussions! As for the 'techniques' we use to do this, the most important one is staying together as a band for over 10 years; even though the lineup has changed in the last few years Steve and I have known Rama and Ryo for as long as OOOD as been going... you get to know each other - and the tracks - pretty well in that time.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

if you are playing your own music so you dont have to plane because you know the music but if you'r playing other artists music so you have to plane (if you dont know the track's well)...           ================

hehehe, Colin, that sounds a lot like what i do when i'm jamming with friends so that's a way to play live too... Good to know just make a good backing-track and jam over it... That's really fun even

I do prepare my dj-sets, when i spin by myself, but if i do a Vs with someone, ofcourse then it's not prepared... But for some reason i feel that my sets are better when they are prepared...

can I try to explain something if you don't mind me taking the podium, all the planners can relax a bit if they take my word on this. If we relax our consious mind we are actually planning things all the time with the unconcious mind, we do it wether or not we relax the consious mind its just if we follow it or not. Ever seen or have you done it your self. Your setting a mix up and instead of going straight in you think about and muck about pulling it back and force checking, to realise that you had it set up perfect inthe first instant. Cosiously we would be better of focusing on keeping a balanced body and a free line of comunication through our body, ie disolving that ego that lets you think you can plan your life and mold it the way you want because if you do one day life will teach you a lesson. Is anybody reading this? I guess the other way is getting distracted on some drug or alchol so that your high consiousness has to take control but I am sure it's a bit stretched to give the best performance, shame on you all you artists puffen on cigarette and drinken booze when people have payyed great sums of money to get you over and travelled far to see you do it.
Anyway is anybody reading this becasue I get little response come on please even if its to tell me to piss off. Anyway planning a set if I had to do it I would choose a variety of sounds ones to cover different advents, I'd feel prepared to convert a death mnetal fan if I had to , or to give a fairy back their wings. Then how could you even think about what your first track is if you haven't got it planned with the act on before.

cool axis I love it when a track reappears to tingle you once again, it has to go away for a while though, unless it hasn't been relwased on to floor fully yet and your being a tease then that is great. I don't see enough of this on forums, artists hereing from dancers what they like and don't, maybe you get it all the time but it is a lot more thoguht out when in a forum well it is from me anyway. cheers for listening or reading I should say.

LoveCats...

There is one thing I have learned..

IF YOU FAIL TO PLAN, YOU ARE PLANNING TO FAIL..

sure some people wing it.. or think they do but most of the people whoe " wing a set " actually aren;t " winging it "
most people know there tracks and ther keys and have found what works throughtrial and error. So essentialy this is preperation , wouldn;t you agree?
