Realy late night question, which kinda interests me in those sleepless moments...
For a first timer, every great sounding stuff I make makes me go wow.Every mind sawing saw,pad which comes up excellent,FX which makes you say "did I just did that?",beat, playing with effects till you forget you listen the same loop all over, and so on and so forth.
From -pathetic excuse to monitors- sounds,to something people start to wonder "did you actually do that?",it worth them sleepless nights. But some parts start to become less charm when you loop them for hours.
Question is:Do you guys can actually kick off late night, and turn on the stuff you made, having a spliff and going "this is great music right there",or its just all piano roll, synth settings, midi channels and automations for you now,and your own stuff doesn't excite you anymore?
Hope it made sense...And thanks for replies in advance.

yeah man. It's a great feeling going through stuff you've made.
I usually have a cd in my car of something or other i've made just to test it in the car speakers, then that cd just gets left in the cd player for a while
I was thinking about it the other day - if you listen to your own stuff a lot, then your just influencing yourself with your self, if that makes sense. It's interesting to think of it. Maybe that can really help you pinpoint what you really like in your music, so you can do it more.
At the same time, you def need to listen to other music... but I'm definitely agreeing with you on enjoying your own music.

The late night, spliff test on iTunes, with various artists playing and my own tunes in the playlist is a good test of time. It is easy to get excited with something when you've just written the midi file, but will you still like it when you've been listening to other people's music for a couple of hours and then all of a sudden your own tunes drop?
I do love listening to my tunes, almost as much as I love making them.
Having said all that, the first two albums are far from great, engineering/mixing wise. There are a lot of things I can hear going wrong when I listen to the original album tunes, today.
Back then, they sounded ready, because I mixed them to the best of my ability, at the time.
2 years and three albums (the third is ready going in the mastering stages soon) down the line, I still enjoy the music of the first two albums, but not the production. I am just doing 2010 re-edits/re-mixes for my favourite ones, so I can stand listening to them/playing them out.
For example I really love the tune Beat To The Box from our debut Clear Skies album, yet I really wanted to improve on the production side of things, take it up from 138 to 142 and a few things for the 2010 re-edit.

Well ofcourse, its quite natural to like your own music.
Its the melodies inside your head that you create and compose. They run around in your head and when you finally get them in midi it feels good man <3

Yes, if I didnt I wouldn't be making it!
Though sometimes, especially when in the depths of making it, I can get tired of hearing it so much. Simple solution; put it down til the crave to work on it more drags me back in... Thats a good idea anyway, helps 'cleanse the palate' so you dont get desensitized to the flavor. I always find something new to do after putting it aside for a bit. It can be a bit like eating a nice steak every dinner; sooner or later, you've eaten it so much you can't enjoy it the same way.
Sometimes, though its not as easy to just sit and enjoy my tracks without listening critically, looking for the flaws instead of sitting back and letting it move me.

Usually a few months to a year after I've made a track I can be quite smug... Especially when I'm at a friends house, have had a few drinks and just happen to have my I-Pod in my pocket

yes, I like my music but I tend to be very critic, every tiny detail. "this could be better".. "is not perfect"
I guess the technical aspects would kill a trip if I listen to a track of mine during a party eheheh
if there is any aspect that i'm not entirely happy on the track, it pops out it's a good (and strange) feeling when other people like it... and enjoy and dance, and everything sounds good to them.

I enjoy my own music well enough for what it is at the moment, but nothing compares to putting on a track in the car/house when someone doesn't know its you..and they start dancing or getting into it
Even better! if they ask "hey, who is this? its cool!" and you're like...oh yeah...its me
I'm sure actually playing out and getting a reaction from an actual dance floor is incredible. If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

yes it is great to see people blow up and hug the speakers when you are playing
sometimes it sounds good
and sometimes it sounds wtf is this crap?
i am realy not satisfied with my stuff yet
sometimes it sounds nice but still a long way for me untill i'll really like it
most tricky thing is that i create some baseline and sounds and i think "wow i'm good!" and after i go out and come back and listen to what i did i say "wtf? who touched my project?" or "i forgot to save the good version again" lol
