I make synthpatches if i don't have inspiration, then the inspiration comes from the fresh sounds and a track rolls out for sure           http://soundcloud.com/euphoricapsy

Well who ever said the tracks need to be 7 minutes? If you have 40 tracks that are 3-4 minutes. Why don't you make them into a 60 minutes liveset?

And if you are stuck working one way. Maybe try a new project and work in a totally different way. Laying out the beat and bass of a whole track first and then filling it with other sounds can work quite well. Put in the lasers and golden beams in the end!           soundcloud.com/supergroover

There are several threads like this in the forum... but im glad you guys started another one.

This is a common pain for me too...

Everything Cyanescens said is very helpful.

I used to layout the track roughly as it has been suggested but then i was spending too much time listening to a very basic 8 minute track and had a very hard time filling it with creative stuff.

So now i do as follows and it is working like a charm:

- I create an interesting part... whatever makes me inspired in that current moment say a bassline, percs, some chords, noizes and stabs.

- Then i take some lifters, white noize automation, lfo pitchers or whatever and just take that section to a climax.

This way each time i listen it makes me go up with the track's energy and then i repeat the process so i have 2 different sections and one drops to the other!

Repeat this process 3 or 4 times and i have an 8 minute track. Keep using same synths to get an uniform sound to the whole track, repeat some parts with variations and you are there.

For me it is keeping inspiration and energy levels up. So if you want to follow advice just think like this each time you are inside the loop:

TAKE IT TO CLIMAX, filter it up, retrigger, cymbal, white noise, snareroll, more synths, chords, voice sample then break and drop the bass!

I am starting to surprise myself dancing to my own tracks... also when working this way you can easily notice when a given section is not working or not powerful enough, makes much more easy to spot what is missing.

I usually insert a couple of synths to make my lifters and automate parameters like lfo depth and speed, filter cutoff and such so i can create my build ups on the fly.

Also have a couple of delay sends enabled with high feedback values and each time you want to end a section you can automate the send level to create cool ending delays that also help with track's continuity.

I alternate my production with starcraft2 matches... it is working nicely

Also, for CPU saving, make sure u render a lot and bounce most of your sounds i do it with everything except for leads that require midi fix.

In cubase assigning keyboard shortcuts to offline effects is one of the most useful tips i can give. Have one there for your delay, reverb, phaser, reverse, bounce, export, etc. You'll be working much faster then looking for each of this processes into menus each time.

For me it is not a mater of discipline, or inspiration... it is about workflow. When i make music i dont't want to think on how to do stuff i just do it. I create or find each sound i'm looking for and yet every track is a result of serendipity, there is this thing in my head just telling me if i like it or not, sometimes it changes a lot so it is a good exercise to delete stuff that doesn't work in a track, sometimes we like to force it and say "yes it is cool" but when u try to dance to it it just sux, so delete it and bring in something that doesn't give the feeling.

Good luck guys.

Many people who go into creative, like writing, music and whatnot have some sort of attention deficite...

Do what many writers do,just start with your climax if you are impatient.First of write your loops where you use the most instruments, most automation, most everything, the highlight of specific segment in your track. Then you will not have the temptation to rush in into business...And from that climax build backwords your loops.

And shit,equipment is freeking important ( .

smoke some strong marocan hash , you will finish tracks and think you made the best fucking track you never heard until you wake up next morning ,then you can fix stuff while clean before you get stoned again and write more tunes. (ps: don t go buy some hash if you have focus problems, i m not serious )

I seriously get the coolest ideas for sound design in that tiny little window once a day when I get home from work and I get stoned. That 15-20 minute period almost always produces a cool idea for sound design

However, that period is also when it's kind of tedious to open up the sequencer and lay out your ideas, especially if it involves semi-complicated routing and whatnot

so, I've invested in an art pad, and I just write down my ideas as best I can...and then look at them later when I feel like getting all techy. Has really helped, I definitely reccomend it.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

I don't have motivational problems, just problems with getting out the sounds I have in my head. But when I get a nice beat on, it's easy for me to continue for hours and hours with the project and usually they turn out pretty nice.

Right now I have a melody in my head and I can hear a lead synth but I have no idea how to continue from here so I'll just improvise some other shit in the meanwhile
