Do you back up your music stuff?

When I started making music more seriously, I realised if I lost my project files in a hard drive crash, I'd have a mental breakdown because every project is unique and I couldn't recreate them. Not to mention losing all the synth & effect patches & samples I've spent dozens of hours creating. So I've been making regular back ups of my project files and carefully picked & sorted sample directory on CD and DVD.

Then last year my new HD started having hiccups. It made uncomfortable noises and eventually started crashing the whole system. That scared the living crap out of me because I hadn't backed up for a while (out of laziness ), but fortunately I managed to boot the computer on my old HD and copy the files there.

So do you back up and what media do you use? DVD? Another HD?

I'm thinking about replacing DVDs with an external HD because it's faster, bigger (my samples directory alone is 5.3 GB ) and more reliable, and you can disconnect it so that if your computer is for example infected with a virus, it won't affect the backups.           When rain dries, clouds form.

Thats true, but for even more security I would recommend using a Raid system with "mirroring" enabled. That way you have 2 HDD with exactly the same digital data. So if one of the HDD is a bad production you still have better percentage of safety by having the mirror on the second one.

Or use DVD and check them from time to time for errors. There are tools that give you the overall readerror rate for DVD's from which you can see when the DVD will have too bad quality to be kept. At that point you can still make a copy cause CD's and DVD's are "encoded" in a way that the drives can tolerate a certain percentage of errors while reading.

Naah i never backup anything. Maybe i'm just lazy or maybe its a subconcious desire - wanting to get rid of all that junk of unfinished projects on my HD ... those that i just can't press shift+delete and always say i'll continue someday but i know i never will.
A hard drive crash would actually seem more like the start of something new and fresh ... less worries

Synth/fx/mixer presets and samples i've record from movies would be a bummer to lose but i got that covered since i use 2 different pcs and i have most of them in both systems.

I had a drive crash and I DID lose everything. Had to pay for it to be recovered because there was a track that was supposed to be released on it.

I backup most stuff to DVD infrequently. I could recover if I lost everything right now, but I'm miss a few weeks work. Nothing I couldn't start again if I really tried. Sometimes when Cubase crashes after I've done a good session, I find a few things turn out better if I try to recreate them, perhaps because I had the idea in my head of what I wanted instead of experimenting.

Also, can we all learn the difference between 'lose' and 'loose', 3rd time I've spotted it today. I'm worried the Commercial Hippies mispelt their album 'loose control' but we'll probably never know.

I've got myself a 2.5" hd for backups... laptop drives known to be more shock-forgiving.           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

I have every project & every sample I own on different dvd's, external hdd, desktop, laptop and even on a dvd in my car (for when my house burns down). I don't take risks, it's a small effort and I will be so grateful to myself when anything happens. I can't imagine losing all my music + my work (which is mostly pc-data too).           http://www.soundcloud.com/bandarlog

it has been said that if you dont backup your work its as good as non-existant...
remember the digital talk incident? really worth backing up everything, all the time!

Don't get addicted to the results of your activity, hehe.

Well, just 2 HD (sata-II), learned about raid when already having sata, don't know if there's much difference actually except the speed.

What if your house burns down and your car is stolen?

Just kidding, that's highly unlikely to happen.           When rain dries, clouds form.
