i am switching from se to sm, coz fl8 will have built in sm.

havn't done much with it yet, but i like it already very much. at the moment i am thinking about fmspiralator and sinex sm versions, just to see the differences and for learning..

...don't know any good resources, compared to se the direct help of sm is deluxe

what are u planing or working on?            Signature

i know 2 things about it
1st. it sounds better than synth edit out of the box.

2nd. it takes alot longer to load a sunthmaker plugin into any host and when i mean long i mean looong.. but after that it works great.

what else i know is that when u use code outside the premade modules in SM u can get some great sounding synhts.

im expecting my fl version to start making some twisted effects.           http://www.landmark-recordings.com/

Built in sm in fl8, what? How do you mean? load .OSM files in fl8?

You see thats the problem with SM, their documentation is below the worst. For taking 3 years to develop the program, they could at least spent 1 week on the documentation for the modules and syntax that can be used in the code-module for instance.
Compared to synthedit which is very logical where you only work with CV, in SM you have a shitload datatypes, arrays and so on, you have more options on the expense that its alot tougher to understand

I want to implement a suboscillator in the synth, and im not talking about just adding a downpitched osc here like a few examples i´ve seen is using. What i want to do to implement is based on non-linearity. So the calculation to do it is like this. Cos(x)= sqrt(0.5(1+cos2x)) where cos(2x) is the in signal, what we would end up with here would be the frequency component below the first harmonic from the original oscillator.

so what we tried to do to get the square root from the expression using one of the modules called stream power where we inserted a float variable with the value 0.5 into the "exponent"-input. But it didn´t do the trick for us. Anyone that has a different idea?

To pavel, sorry mate, reaktor does not count =)

To orange: With the update 1.0.9 they really reduced the loading time. Which version are you rendering in?

Well my experiance with it is opening it up, messing with it for five minutes, coming to conclusion that its good and shutting it down..
I will use it one day, till I got some inspiration on what synth do I want to make.. But I find it hard also, I couldnt even set background picture on vst in that five mins..           http://www.myspace.com/djacidkills

what do you need to know?

I know it backwards, although, I've come to the conclusion the SE is better in many, many ways... the envelopes have issues in SM, and the maths doesn't work at audio rate.

I can live without feedback in SE - you can code your own modules in C that can do this. There is no easy way around the issues in SM.           .

I have had a bit of education in Max MSP and still know how to use some of it.... it is kinda similar to Reaktor, a bit more complicated, but I found since I learned it that I knew a hell of a lot more how to use Reaktor...           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

its mostly about sythesis, i think if u know what u doin on a synthesizer then u should hav no problems with SM.... maybe read som circuit diagrams of famous synths, i do this for ideas on new synths and stuff, i do most of my work in reaktor tho coz it can be loaded as an fx and an instrument inside a host DAW           [[[G|L|I|T|C|H]]]

hmmm, looking more closely at the thread, did you notice that the steam power function is actually upside down from how most people would expect it?

ie exponential is the *top* connection?

I've used the module to build a saturating/limiting device and it works fine...?

I don't understand how you are implementing cos either. If you are using the green data function then forget it, because green data doesn't work at audio rate, or anywhere near it, if however you are saying that what you are putting in is the equivalent of cos2x thats slightly different. Or perhaps you mean that you are using the cos function in the code module, in which case did you notice that it outputs in the range 0-1 instead of what most sums will be set up for as 0-2(pi)?

And yes, 1.0.9 is waaaay better then previous versions IMO. I'd been running into problems with precision loss and all manner of mad shit before this version.

And if you are confused by the code module check the tutorial on the wiki they have which is about as clear as they can get, although yes the manual on this section blows.

If in doubt chuck me the .OSM of the bit that isn't working right (obv not the the whole thing you are working on) and I can see if I can implement it.

I think this just speaks to the time/difficulty of such a massive undertaking of a project of this nature that doesn't have alot of money/experience behind it.
I've tried SM/synthedit/reaktor, ect...
I'm finally going to get into Max when Max 5 comes out and not look back.
With Max you can export to vst, have people on the boards that have been at this for 20 years to answer questions, the base algorithms have been developed/refined for 20 years, 20 years spent on the documentation so at this point its extremely thorough.
Something like synthmaker simply can't compete with the size of their team/hours in the day.
