in my humble opnion, Ultimae has itīs own sonoritie, i mean, when you search for a relase from Ultimae, or expect a new compilation or VA, you are familiar with your trademark sounds.

i listen to Cell Hanging Masses and CBL interlooper, and they are very , but very very diferent. but they represent the Ultimae sound.

kinda like Parvatti recs in the trance field...you already know what to expect when you listen or know them.

the thing is probably if you give a very superficial listen, and donīt go deep and probably listen to it in diferent periods of your life, and sometimes at the 1st listen it doesnīt enter well, it may seem similar, i agree on that. but if you search, listen carefully, each artist has itīs own unique sound.

i also recognize that probably an artist create a trend, or a certan peculiar sound, it is only natural, it will evolve into integration with other artists, and certain sounds, may seem similar.

but the bottom line is: Ultimae artists, each have their unique sounds, but Ultimae recs has a trademark sound.

not to sure if i explained it well hehe

ps: i do not like all of the releases of Ultimae, but that is another story. i only like some, but even for that fact, they still donīt sound the same...simply some sounds get me moving others donīt           ...

Ultimae have a trademark sound, and i put that down to its core artists, solar fields ,aes dana, asura, cbl who have developed this technique...epic expansive sometimes dramatic 'filmscore'. When one hears a new Ultimae release there is a sense of deja vu...this free track by gaiana is like old ultimae

So far the most exciting releases this year for me has been Seamoon, Mauxuam and Altar label.

I won`t say, that Ultimae records has a trademark sound, since there have been very diverse releases. Hol Baumann, Hybrid Leisureland, James Murray, I Awake and so on. That might only be true for CBL, SF, Aes Dana, H.u.v.a. Network, Asura. They might be called "typical Ultimae", but are also different in so many ways.

Charles,

The label definitely has some over arching themes in the music.

*epic film score like feel
*usually a little more melancholy (with Alexandre's middle work as a notable exception)
*lots of cross pollination from other electronic and real styles mixed in over the above themes

That's where the similarities end. Each artist is their own unique journey and exploration. If I was going to liken it to anything I would compare you guys to Dogtown and the Z-boys. You are all pretty close and spend time with each other outside of just music related stuff. It's like just how the z-boys were always pushing each other more creatively with their exploration of vert skating in pools than any other skaters were outside of their circle. So they all had some of the same techniques, and aggressive style, but did it all in their own unique way.

I think it's pretty simple actually, if you're not listening to electronic music a lot of it sounds the same to you...that applies to sub genres as well, people can't really tell the difference between tech house or prog house...let alone tell the difference between artists that make ambiental chill out and all collaborate with each other, doesn't mean they sound the same           DJ Dovla | Interchill Records, Flow Records

Asura 2010 - Stutter effects on melody with breaks - easy way to make a creativity for own music)

Solar fields - background atmosphere music in 2010 like space meditation and stuff)))

so - i havent seen any same things in sounds in last albums of those two artists, pure different....

maybe people cant find differences between Asura 2010 and 2009 for example or Solar fields or CBL?

lets take track 4 of 360 album Atlantis child
0:01 - beautifull start and no clue to resolve the artist name)))) but from 1:40 - i start to recognizing Asura style))

well you wanted or not - Ultimae music more recognizable by people who listenig chill music since many years and they cant explaine it to you by technically bcause they are not a music producers...

I think Ultimae has a recognizable quality of sound as a label, that being that when you buy something from them you will have a general idea of what it will sound like.

This is not a bad thing, and actually I think it is great for a label to have a recognized sound.

If a style works, and it has a large fan base (well large for the electronica scene), then it's an indication that the label has found a very style.

I for one know that many people here in Australia are very eager to one day hopefully have an Ultimae label tour.

Yesterday, I sat by the lake in the city in the spring sunshine reading my book and listened to Albedo and both Oxycanta compilations.

I felt so relaxed and happy, and Ultimae is the only chillout label I have found that truly relaxes me.

I also have played Ultimae albums/compilations for non-electroninca friends and they love them so the unique style has a very crossover possibility.

I also played the Imaginary Friends album during the dinner at my wedding earlier this year, it was really the perfect music to create a nice atmosphere and many people asked me about it afterwards (even people who were 60+ years old!).

I think it is not something to be concerned about, but should be embraced and expanded on by the musicians and other people involved.

The only thing that comes close for me is Ishq and his projects

I hate you, you hate me, we are all so hap hap happy!

As others have said, I think Ultimae certainly has a recognizable sound. When I pop in an Ultimae album, I can be fairly sure that I'm going to hear very mellow ambient music with kind of minimal bits and a slightly melancholy, techy/cold (as opposed to squidgy/organic) feel about it. And when that's what I want, I listen to albums on Ultimae! They have a specific vision in mind and that determines the sound they put out. Good for them. I look forward to many more.

Every Ultimae artist have their own signature sound, however there are some of them that are falling into a "comfort zone" where every album they release sounds the same, they don't push their skills forward enough IMO.

@ herbivore
Nice picture!            - The yeti loves to drink shnaps too, so he's like a real shaman... he, uhm, uh, if you want to contact him, you have to put some alcoholic offerings in front of the forest.
