Everything is in the subject. I read here and there people saying every Ultimae artists sound the same. But I never see explanations or arguments about that. Why do we sound similar? |

You don't.
Each artist and project has its own unique sound and style. |

I think, it's the misunderstanding. The Ultimae artists have the same direction in music to be correct. Personally, I don't want
to add other styles like jazz or techno and loose that unique feel you guys have. Don't become another Warp, trying to catch the pop vibe. |

ultimae artists can sound pretty similar to someone who just got into this genre. When I first got into ambient, albums like season 5, blue moon station and even hydroponic garden all sounded so similar to me. Asura not so much due to that hard and overwhelming kick sound
I think it takes a while before being able to identify each sound

all Ultimae artists don't sound the same, but I would say that they sound similar....isn't that the job of the label manager though, to release music which fits together? I would say that Ultimae sounds solemn, ambient, techy, and spacey. But to be quite honest, I'm not a huge fan of this label like so many others are so perhaps I am off base...
all the album covers look the same though, thats for sure

I don't think every artist/release sounds the same. CBL, Hol Bauman, and Hybrid Leisureland wouldn't be mistaken for one another if listened to on shuffle. Come to think of it, it wasn't all that long ago that people were so disappointed in Scroll Slide because it was too different from what they expect from Ultimae.
Though I do think Ultimae does have a certain signature sound that encompasses all their releases. Probably something to do with mastering as Alienc mentioned. Which is good. It's that particular sound/vibe that sets you apart from other ambient/chillout labels. |

although mastering is an important process it wouldn't make two different sounding projects sound the same. |

Haha, even non-Ultimae artists get jabbed for this, Charles!
I think it has to do with people's lack of patience in processing the details. Yes, there is a certain familiar, not necessarily similar, sound set and song structure (at times) and the final mastering process (by the label) which tends to give a homogeneous feel to the "Ultimae" sound. Let's call the mastering the "milk". I can see why any ignoramus could say the same thing about "all breakfast cereals taste the same" because all he/she is really focusing on is that it's in milk.
Listen closely and then listen even closer. You will see that the artists all have something unique to say.
Always keep in mind that some people are listening and some are hearing the music. There is a *big* difference between hearing and listening to music.

This post sounds a lot more negative than I meant it to be:
Ultimae has one very distinct style that is rarely found outside the label. For example the latest Asura promo mp3 could easily be from some other Ultimae artist. It sounds a lot like them.
The beat is Solar Fields/HUVA/Aes Dana/Asura. The IDM-ish snares(?) are Hol Baumann as is the pipe(?) melody. The background ambient pads are Solar Fields/CBL. At 5:20ish it becomes Solar Fields/CBL and at around 7 minutes I would finally guess Asura.
I am not a sound engineer or have a deep understanding of theory, but I also think there is a "clean" feeling in many tracks that might be from mastering?
I am saying this as someone who clearly oversaturated his Ultimae (and modern psychill/psyambient) taste and who decided to stay away from non-free music. I bought all Ultimae releases until about the Extended and Leaving Home by Solar Fields. Then I realised that I should not waste money by buying more of the "same style" music. I could instead simply go back to the albums I already had. I am not even interested enough anymore to pirate the music. There, you have it, I stopped buying music even though I am not pirating it. Unbelievable to some here I guess.

So if I follow you well The Chilling spirit, the rythm belong to everybody at Ultimae, the glitchy sequence to Hol Baumann, ambient drones and pads to Solar Fields and CBL, 4/4 kick and acid bassline to Asura? Don't you think it's a little bit caricatural? |
