I myself havent listend any really good dj for atleast a decade, and when getting again on a festival in summer I go almost only for good vibes in own adventures + occasionaly pay attention to some lifeacts, although there is not that much extraordinary to see it still is somehow more interesting to know the sounds come from this exactly person.
I still think dj has a function even in psytrance and should survive, what the scene needs are more talented dj's than unreleased demos selectors presenting just the latest hot tunes etc. Some that has the titts to play even some golden tunes from the past in between, also that make more fusion between prog, goa, psytrance etc in their sets. I would love to listen again to real spins from turntables , they always sound thousand times more blasting somehow with its unperfection and small possible differences, sound more human and alive somehow. At least for me.           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

the dj has got (or should have) a larger repertoire to choose from than an artist who showcases his/her/their own music. a dj should never play less than 2 hours.
the dj is a story teller or a dream weaver. one who can take the dancer to "heaven and hell" and back again. he/she is the master of the ceremony who should be taking the journey seriously and plan a route beforehand. when the dj masters his/her skill he/she can start interacting with the energies of the dancers and start to improvise on the spot.
we need skillful, open-minded and enthusiastic djs.
we do not need djs who play like itunes genius.           "no one ever sweats on a plug-in" -moby

only psytrance scene slowly erases djing...don't know...why should the artist just press play?should't he mix his tunes whith others?this would be much more interesting...and we could avoid completly different prearrangments that kill the flow of music in festivals...or are the promoters the djs of 1hr live acts in a 5 day dj set?

anyer i hope only djs like you keep existing. ones that actually direct musical stuff, collect and publish compilations, indulge in radio and podcasts and serve as a hub for their style.

vic triplag also comes to mind doing the same for the music he believes in.

Judging by the amount of money big names DJs are making at Las Vegas clubs these days, and that this is a fairly new and hugely lucrative 'market' for promoters (especially that it's less costly than hiring live bands), the DJ is here for quite a while.

And of course all of what Jurgen said.

i prefer a dj set over a live act any time of the day... i think the best examples ive seen for the huge difference that this makes was with dick trevor/george barker set in a party i was in a week ago - dick was supposed to play a green nuns set, george was supposed to play a slinky wizard set, and sometime they were supposed to play a slinky nuns set together - all live of course (=each with their own project materials) - what happened eventually was that they both played together for about 4 hours, going back to back with their own tracks, some other tracks from the flying rhino repertoire and also some vinyls that had nothing to do with any of their projects nor the flying rhino label - turned out to be one of the best sets i have ever heard, and it was one hell of a psychedelic journey

+1

DJs will not stop existing.

First because it is fun to DJ.

Second because some people need more idols to worship than good music to listen and dance to.
