DMMT - Africa Bombastic
After a year of fine-tuning their sound at all the top psy-trance events in Cape Town, South Africa last summer, DMMT emerges with their debut release “Africa Bombastic.”
They may be a new name on the international trance scene, but the members behind DMMT are both experienced sonic manipulators.
Dave Mac is one of South Africa’s most experienced and busiest dj’s having rocked SA dance-floors since 1997. Over the last 8 years in South Africa he has co-hosted Alien Safari events, Prism New Year events and the “SA Total Solar Eclipse” with Etnicanet and Vortex. He also founded the first psy-trance show on local dance radio station, Mutha FM.
Martin (Dj Bones) Treurnich is a seasoned guitarist, sound engineer and a dj who has dabbled in drum ‘n bass and house before being sucked into the infectious grooves of psy-trance.
Together as DMMT they offer a fully layered soundscape of four to the floor psychedelic trance delivered with a dash of sleaze and a firm touch of craziness, all underpinned by a solid groove and genuine musicality.

Freefall Records joins the South African psy-trance explosion of exciting labels to originate from the trance Mecca of Africa… Cape Town. Their first release is the debut album “Africa Bombastic” by DMMT, who have spent the last year fine-tuning their sound and have performed for every major promoter in South Africa over the last twelve months. DMMT may appear newcomers on the global trance scene, but Dave Mac & Martin Treurnich are both seasoned sonic manipulators. Dave is one of South Africa’s most experienced dj’s and Martin a busy session guitarist and sound engineer. Together as DMMT they offer an album jam-packed (78 mins of music) with massive tunes that seem to always ignite that “chaos button” on dance-floors. If you have been caught in the thick of it on a Cape Town trance floor in the last year then there's a very good chance you have worked up sweat to a DMMT live set. Creating some seriously groovy and tripped out sounds the freaky minds of DMMT (also known as Dave Mac and DJ Bones) have clearly been stuck deep in the studio polishing up their biggest tunes all winter. Their collection of 11 big bottomed stormers screams PARTY all the way, and just in time for the crazy season. Funky and powerful basslines fuse neatly with deeply tripped out atmospheres setting the stage for some sampledelic mayhem entertaining up front. Clips from some classic rock tracks bounce between snarly acid riffs and some of their own guitararama too. Clearly focused on developing their own sound, DMMT is a mix of full-on power meeting progressive groovyness with a definite morning/sunrise feel, a sure-fire winner in my book! I’ve only just become aware of this one but – in two words - bloody hell. Two more words: bloody HELL! Fluidly solid psychedelic trance, with depth and excitement, great sounds and a couple of upbeat cover versions quietly thrown in. First Drag has such a nice sound to it, the sort of sound you want to immerse yourself in completely, like a supermodel’s thighs. There’s a strong vibe of a tight energy busting at its own seams, making for a nicely hypnotic little boogie. Rock n’ Roll is a belter – there’s an incredible little drag on the end of the bassline that, along with plenty of deep reverb, gives an extra dimension. There’s fantastically tight escalation, with interesting noises, and plenty of changes – all without going too full-power-screech. And it fucking works. As does Black Pearl, a finer example of semi-dark psytrance I am hard-pressed to name. Once again the sounds are great (non-derivative, exciting, and tightly-produced), and once again there’s a rare magnetism in the music that keeps you focussed. Dazed And Confused features a couple of (frankly rather overdue) samples from the Led Zep tune of the same name: erring on the right side of cheese as it does so. It’s a gnarly, fast-paced but of cheeky psytranceadelica, not too manic or parvati-bothering. Impressive and cheekily quirky, with more snippets of songs than you can possibly keep count of. Real Men Don’t Dance sees things take a turn for the darker, with that scratchy SA sound coming out of the forests to chase you. It’s tightly done, with a very smooth energy making it sound organic rather than forced, with a final run that’ll have you creaming your pants (or your money back). As you may expect from the track title, Jacob’s Ladder pops another dose into your cup of tea and makes things more interesting and colourful still – the sounds here are nothing short of breathtaking, and the energy is just out of this world. You would be kidding yourself if you said that Break On Through, complete with cheeky Jim Morrison samples used to superlative effect, was the best track on the album – but it’s jolly good fun. Passion, on the other hand, is downright f*ing good music. Sounding like it could be the ‘guitar track to end all guitar tracks’ ™, it chucks I a classical music break, throws in loads of effects, flirts with a cheesy bassline before correcting the balance with a shitkicking middle run. No Point Of Return takes the foot off the pedal a little, with more space in the music and a bubbly psychedelia winning over the frenetic rhythm section. Africa Bombastic sounds a little like Juno’s Jungle High remixed by Azax & Toxic, with some more cheeky samples that are simply fucking delicious. Finally, 21 Grams closes the album in a seriously loud stylee – mentalist, full-throttle psychedelic trance. Phew. At the end of the day, this is a serious album. It’s interesting, it’s exciting and it takes a good few listens before its depth really tarts to grow on you. Superlative stuff.

Sounds like an incredible original newcomer....ears & brain are peakin' while listening to the samples....superb twilight/morning stuff....can't wait to hear the album !!!!
