Im sure there are many exceptions to this little "secret" of mine, like D-nox for instance, Dimitri, Edoardo.. these dj's acctually have skills to backup there reputation's.. and there are others, who do not..
but its all about the music, and skill is something techno dj's should be talking about right??

As with any hobbie, there is always going to be someone who is instinctively better. The only way to be the best is to be the only one. The good thing about hobbies is you don't care what other people think because you get personal satisfaction from what you do. It's not a game of who's better or who's using a beat counter, but a way of life and a way to share your experience of it. I've been a dj for 11 years and seen alot of dj's that all had there own style. Some mixing better than others and some using beat counters or pre-planning there sets. I have respect for all of them, these are the people who found a connection to the higher consciousness of trance and are trying to experience it to there fullest. These people are our family and need to be treated as such. Judge not unless you stand to be judged. We are all our peers. |

Trackselection.. hum.. let me think about this one..
well, the only problem with saying "what makes a Dj is there trackselection" is that, well, not everyone has the same tastes in music.. what some people praise, other's hate !! its too personal to judge a dj by what tracks they play.. that's why we have to find something a little more technical, a little less general.. a standard such as HOW !!!
any dj can play killer tracks !! not every dj know's how to play them. I know many Dj's who have no talent as a Dj and crossfade killer tracks the whole set.. people like that because of the tracks he plays.. ok, that's fine.. but does that make him a good DJ ?? not in my books.. like people who mix using a PC. there is no skill involved, no talent.. just pressing buttons and "auto-pitch" .. ohh, but they make superdooper long mixes.. its all emotionless.. i once had a tracklisting for a gig.. my mixing was tighter than ever.. after my set, my friends came to see me and told me i was like a robot up there.. no emotion, stressed as hell..they told me it was my worst set.. it had nothing to do with trackselection.. people can feel the vibe you release. They know what's going on even if they couldn't see me looking at my pre-determined trackselection.. Never again did i do that to the people....
i'll let you all in on a little secret.. promise you will not cry.. what else REALLY makes a "good" dj is how many parties he throws per year, how well he self promotes himself, how many friends he has, how many tickets he can sell for his gigs ... Sad yes, but there is some truth in those words !! accept it or not, that's up to you !

yes... un doubtedly, but the original post is abt dj's using counters, im saying it doesnt matter because any trance 'dj' knows the .7scale, and how to cue and pitch bend a track to make sure its mixing, so its generally track selection that seperates a good dj from a great dj...
His promotion, relationship with the organsiers is secondary.... when i go to see a 'dj' i go to hear flawless mixing and killer track selection, WHATEVER his style, be it gms or kindzaaza.... If he dresses in a pink bikini to draw a crowd thats his perogative, but his music is what should spk... i think anyways..
The last part of post is very true... no argument there!! |

Is a good DJ a DJ who beatmatch simular BPM tracks sooo good that the whole 3 hourish set sounds like one track? Or a DJ who tries to varie his set with different BPM tracks, but makes a small mistake or two throughout his set? .. I would deffently prefer DJ number 2.
Some times the sets by good DJ's using only 145 full-on or dark Full-on tracks can become A TAD boring imo.

First a good DJ is two things.
1. Technical and pro skills. (Ninja Tunes all the way!) "Real" Hip-Hop Spinners always rock the most.)
2. A story teller that leads the listening crowd into a voyage. Ergo track selection (Try to look at it objectively, or what ever grammer word I'm trying to write). Best is when this is combined. Of cource.
Also good if the DJ has good contact with the crowd. Carl Coxx, Pete Tong, and the guy from the movie "It's all gone Pete Tong" and those spinners are good crowd DJ's and in technical aspects.
To the quote: Are you dissing Aphex, Squerepusher ect ect ect? .. It's often very different if the DJ creates music infront of you, live. On his laptop. I donno. Just guessing a bit.
