This is not only restricted to 'foreign' artists but several 'upcoming' artists from India are jumping on to the bandwagon of using names of certain gods as a part of their 'screen name'.

While those within the trance community certainly understand the significance and what the artist is trying to represent (shanti, cosmic oneness, peace, unity, respect), for the mainstream public it is another point to ridicule and insult the psytrance scene without fully understanding the idea behind it.

Do you think this will have to change on order for our music to become more socially acceptable in India?

PS: I am a first timer but certainly not a troll!

wow that's a hardhitting first topic... welcome to the forum!

Yes, social acceptance in India now is about something we're unfamiliar with. Connotations to deities sound silly in a place where you hear the same word so often in such a different context, and more often than not, sounds pretentious to the Indian ear.

From experience those who have chosen a name linking to a deity did it out of a personal connection to certain values. Most of the time the name is chosen based on the artists own connection to the consciousness of the deity. That connection runs very deep and thoughts of social acceptance don't quite fit into the process.

But yes, would be nice to hear some cheekier and edgier artist names coming of India. There are some really hip names in the indie-electronic scene... Teddy Boy Kill, Sulk Station, Tempo Tantrick. Maybe it's because bands have a different approach to choosing a name?
