hi,
is anyone using ableton's live for dj sets?
it seems like a large time-consuming task, especially when it comes to warping the samples. is it worth the effort? what's the recommended setup?
comments, please. |

you mean mixing recors or loops?
i have done a liveset with live, using live for beats, percussion and basses, and a mp7 as sequencer for the synths, and it simply rocks.
if you want to play records from your pc i'd recommend atomix virtual dj, wich has been made for dj'ing with your pc |

i mean playing full tracks. i know some djs are into it, sasha for example. live gives you advantages like applying effects to the tracks, playing loops, auto beat-matching, among others. |

I think Live is very nice for DJ'ing, but the way of working is very different and the warping does take a bit of time and effort to get right.
But the advantages is worth it.
To be able to bring in loops synchronized and apply plugins is great fun and the way you actually set up the mix ahead in time makes it easier to play around a lot.
Be patient, set up a nice configuration that suits how you like to work and practice and I think you'll find that it's superior to regular DJ'ing software once you get used to the differences.

I think if a Dj is not able to match the beat per hand he should rather start playing golf or something like that instead of beeing a Dj.I think beat matching is a very essential part of this Art.
Maybe i'm a little bit old fashioned but the truth is since all this tools are around (mostly downloaded from the internet as well as the sound they try to play)everybody seems to be a Dj's even if they have know idea how to make a propper mix in real life.
I'm sure there are some mate's they do a pretty good job on this tool but i personally haven't heard one so far .
Nice greetings

That it's easier to beatmatch using software is not a negative aspect IMO.
Many DJ's would do a lot better with software, so why not? Should we only hear over and over again the handful of DJ's that in this scene that actually can play good music AND mix?
Reality is that the parties would flow much better if more people played with Live or Traktor. Maybe in ideal world everyone should be able to make perfect mixes with the most basic setup, but obviously thats not the case.
The more time that can be spent focusing on track selection, making nice transitions between the tracks and adding fx is only good.
But if you still want to be a purist you can of course match beat by ear and still have all the advantages that software like live can bring.
It's just to approach it with an open mind ...don't use the beatmatching function if you think matching the beat by ear is essential for the result.
Live will still give you a lot of advantages that can make DJ'ing a lot more varied and interesting skill than just making sure that a couple of tracks is aligned.

this is real life,
and its called technology.
u better notice whats going oon not to left behind.. beat match is one click today.. tho i can make it on cdj i rather all options open.. as spindrift said.. i can even play with sync to my nord real time patterns.. via midi clock.. try do that with ears u probably have 10 ms latency (if not more) at least some of the times.. not with sync. also apply to delays loops etc.

Just for the record i can beatmatch. Its not beatmatching what im interested in, its more the use of effects and loops in a dj set to spice things up a bit.
I think spindrift is right and it should be approached with an open mind. I would really like to give it a shot but the problem is that preparing a set takes up a lot of my time, not to mention the fact that i still dont have the proper controllers to do it right
In my case its a lot easier to just walk in with a couple of my cd cases and lay down the tunes.
Using live it feels like I'm learning all over again! I'm used to a physical dj setup.
spindrift: have you used live for your dj sets? what controllers do you use? and how much time do you spend preparing a set? |

@alux
I used to use Traktor for a few years, but tried out using Live instead for the first time a couple of days ago.
I had to sit quite a few hours and practice to get quick and precise in warping the tracks and configuring the software so I had nice control using my evolution MK-225.
I basically assigned the knobs to volumes and filters on my channels and use the black keys as switches and the white for triggering samples and loops.
Apart from that it takes a bit of time getting finding a good way to work with live, once you got it I find using a computer reduces the need for preparing before a set.
Your tracks is much more easily accessible and easier to preview than if you use CD and you can follow the waveform to know where there is breaks.
So apart from coming to terms with the technology in the beginning you can spend less time to prepare the set and do more of that work in realtime at the party.
The big difference with Live is that you do not do your mixing hands-on in the same way as with Traktor or CDs.
You align next track graphically ahead of time instead.
That makes the workflow quite relaxed since you don't have to worry as much about when next track should come in and don't waste a lot of time waiting for the right moment to start the mix.
Instead you can keep busy playing around with adding stuff or finding next track.
I must say though...playing with CDs is easier in many ways, especially when it comes to setting up at the party.
When it's a tight, dark and messy DJ box it can feel a bit like you wish you would just settle for playing CDs.
Both with traktor and live it's easy to keep busy with something all the time so it will result in more work.
So computer DJ'ing is not good IMO to make the job of a DJ easy....rather the opposite.
But it's great if you want to make the art of DJ'ing more advanced and have a lot of possibilities.
