Does anyone do it? My concern is that my headphones won't be loud enough for me to hear. As it is right now I can't bear really really loud sound and I'm afraid that my ears are going to be damaged

Whenever I'm at parties I always put the foam earplugs on and dance right in front of the speaker, sounds way better than earplugs off IMO

Well most mixers have a knob for the headphones volume, you could acutally adjust it to fit your needs while most headphones made for djing isolates from the outside

True, but if the P.A. is really fucking loud, you need to turn up your booth monitors, in order to get most of the sound from them. Otherwise you get a lot of the delayed slapped back sound from the venue and it can really get on your tits. Its not how loud your headphones are, but the DJ booth that fucks your hearing up in most cases.

Why do you have to dance right in front of the speakers?

I used to use earplugs untill i lost them
when you are using pro earplugs like elacin the effect will be same as u just took 20 db out of the sound system, u hear all frequencies as loud as the shoud be in -20 db.
I find it to be more pleasurable to use plugs, all sounds are more clear and if you have friend who uses plugs also u can speak in midle of dance floor with out shouting

loud noises will damage your hearing perminetly and there is no way of repairing it and btw. no earplugs will save u from low frequencies they go thru your skull so dancing in front of speaker is just one way to make sure u will have tinnitus later on your life           http://www.myspace.com/polly_potb

I should have been clearer.

If I don't wear earplugs, it's too loud no matter where in the room I am.

So I put earplugs on, and then dance in front of the speaker because that's where it sounds (and feels) the best.

Btw, I had my gig on saturday night and was wearing foam earplugs all the way in and I feel like I djed a lot better than the last time I spun on a big soundsystem without the earplugs

I was only a little concerned because I had the headphone volume at 3 oclock and thought I might be damaging my headphones, but then I saw other djs had it all the way up so I figured I was fine

foam earplugs suck big time, sound quality on those is terrible, it cuts down frquencies differently.
there is products that has been designed to music listening some are cheaper and some are expencive.

here is one link to expencive ones, but money that you invest to these is worth every penny
http://www.elacin.com/hearing-protection/elacin-er-flexcomfort/
you can use these at least 4 years (4 year warranty)
they fit perfectly underneath headphones or you can get special "headphones" to fit on earplugs, sennheiser has one and probably many others           http://www.myspace.com/polly_potb
