What would you PROs advice a beginner to do:

* Learn to DJ first and then produce OR
* Be brave man, be positive, Go Produce!!

Personally, I started as a dj. Because I have a better sense of dancefloor flow due to djing for 4 years prior to producing.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

personally i would start to produce as fast as possible! play around and learn... it takes some years to get a set of good quality tracks...

then when i got some more spare time i would go with fellow artists that play and dj and have done for a while and learn with them... hehe then after that i would rock the party!

as mubali says being a DJ you have a better feel for what works on the dance floor, and may have a better insight into the trends of the scene.

I'd recommend to do both as one will help the other. learning about Dj-ing will help your feel for tunes and learning about production will help your musical knowledge and appreciation of good tunes.

well...
you can parctice DJing when you're not producing
or you can produce while you're not DJing.

now, no matter what you'll do it will take some time to reach the goal. so try messing with both of them.           <One learns people through the heart, not the eyes or the intellect>

I started out playing guitar (first classical, then rock, metal and fusion). Then after a while i got infected with the acid-vibe and started dj-ing. After about a year i wanted to get into psytrance-production. I'm convinced that whatever you do, in whichever order you do it, you can benefit from it. Playing an instrument can give you an edge (learning scales, tempo's, feel, groove), just like the experience from dj-ing can (learning what works on a dancefloor and how to organize a track so you can mix it). I can highly recommend both. At the moment i'm thinking about buying a pair of bongo's to learn something there (and to make my own percussion loops). I think it can never hurt to learn dj-ing or playing an instument, it's FUN !!!

Thanks a lot for all the input friends!!!

Me personally am going to dive into the deep end and get into production. I do not have any prior musical knowledge and am still at the bottom of the learning curve. When i listen to some of the music played at parties and all i say to myself- man, you don't stand a chance!!
Some of these guys are fuckin' mind boggling magicians!!
and it all comes with practice, dedication and hard work and BIG UP to ALL artists!!!

Another thing, can someone please tell me if there are any music lessons i must take? Like, do i need to be able to write music to make Psy? Be able to play the keyboards? Anything else?

All responses will be gratefully received.

Thank you all for your time and patience and please forgive my ignorance!

You don't need to learn how to play anything, although it's a big plus. Knowing music theory is a must though.
What you do need is a musical ear - some people are born with it, some need to develop. This comes with time.
I can't really play anything, although I know what I'm doing when I'm "playing" a guitar or a keyboard. I use that to try to hear what I gonna write before I actually write it down in Cubase, I use the mouse for that

music theory is what i must be learning to do this right?
Is it something i can learn by myself or do i need to go to music lessons?
I can't really afford school and things like that but if someone could suggest books, websites etc i would be most grateful.

Thanks everyone.

-Well i dont believe this to be the biggest reason for bad productions and crappy music. When you start to produce, you will automatically become, much more aware of the constuction of a "soundscape", than any piano teacher or rock guitarist. What i mean is that musical knowledge can also be a disadvantage... a knowledge that will drag you in a specific direction, due to stuff that you mean is "correct" or good....
Ppl. should make what they find nice!
