Hello All,
This is an awesome instrument and am going to learn how to play but its going to take me some time coz of other commitments.
Now, for the time being, i was wondering if someone can help me get this sound using a VST instrument. I don't want to use loops or pre made samples. It'll be cool if i could make this sound myself.
I hope this is possible, if not please can you suggest any alternatives?
Thank You for your help.
Peace.

Thats a percussive synth that someone just posted in the Kickdrum thread. Hav'nt tried it, but give it a shot.
I doubt you are going to find a synth that manages to mimic the sounds of the proper tribal drums. What PsyMex suggested seems like just a sampler with a whole lot of drum samples that you can modulate slightly.
You don't have to use complete drum loops, but with a decent sampler, you could take different bongo hits and make your own loops. That way your keeping things original ;-)
Hope that helped |

Bharath,
The closest I've been able to come up with is loading some samples of african drums into redrum in Reason.
Each redrum I treat as one drum.
There are basically six hits on a djembe:
Bass - right hand
Bass - left hand
Tone - right hand
Tone - left hand
Slap - right hand
Slap - left hand
So I'll have six samples loaded into redrum, and program my rhythms as I would play my drum.
Unfortunately you don't get any ghost hits or some of the quirkier hits, but it sounds pretty good when you have two or three of these digital 'djembes' playing. |

Fuzzi - ghost hits ?
Remember to play around with your velocity a lot as well to make it sound less "robotic". |

@illusions:
Dude, that looks pretty good but i want the Djembe sounds man. I want it to be a big part of the track. I mean, it will have the same prominence(?) as say the lead. Also, i WANT THAT sound!!!!!
I love the instrument man!
Cheers for the tip Bro! i'll try it sometime this weekend. maybe we'll do some music this weekend. I'll give you a call later. take Care bro!
@Fuzzikitten:
Yeah, i know about those three sounds Alex but i don't know how to make them using a Synth. :-( I wish i could. The other day i was fucking around with Synth1 and i got the tone sound by accident! I was well pleased with myself but like an idiot i didn't save it! hehehe...
but Thanks for your help Alex! Much Appreciated!
so looks like till i can play the Djembe's properly samples are the way to go.
Anyone else Please?
Peace.

Bharath,
If you have a decent mic you can do what I did - sample the 6 hits (or more, for realistic drums) and load them into a sampler.
Wish I knew how to synthesize those sounds though, that would be cool.

Thanks!

When a drummer gets going into the rhythm they will make a lot of 'false' hits which are barely audible. Listen to some good live hand drumming and you'll hear lots of soft hits, called ghost hits. There's not much in the way of pattern to them, they're sporadic, but they really give a groove life.

my tips on creating djembe sequence:
get an akai cd of percussions, load a few samples into a vst sampler.
try to move a few hits from the grid/quantize to make a more "live" feeling.
try to open wave`s "doubler" vst - it make the effect that more than one player is druming. |

And don't forget to practize playiing the real drum, especially together with other players. It'll improve your whole music and it is FUN!
