Just for fun.....

So what do you think, should dj's be allowed to play if they are not artists also?

I don't know if I got the point of this topic.... but I'll try

There are many talented DJ's that make a perfect choice and track order. But, on the other hand, it is much more difficult to be an artist than being a DJ. The artist creates the music that the DJ plays. That's why artist will always be more appreciated than the DJ's.
I don't see any reason why a DJ that is not an artist should not play on a party, but I also think that a party without an artist (let's say that the DJ is playing perfectly) is a party with the feeling of something missing.

I think there is way too much focus on "live acts" in this scene now. It's no secret that there are tons of djs who play more exicting sets than live acts, and there are of course some artists who play better dj sets than "live" sets.           ________________________

To follow this logic, nobody should be allowed to play Beethoven's piano concertos except Ludwig van himself.. too bad he's been dead 200 years..

          ..it's just another party..

i feel that there should be a balance between live acts and dj's.

here's my take on it since i am both. when you play "live", you're playing music that you have written, usually not anybody elses.

some people might not like every single one of your tracks and your set could have mixed emotions on the dancefloor.

whereas, a dj, should have plenty of different cds in their arsenal when they step up to the decks. when i spin, i try to play the best tracks from as many different artists as possible to create a story.

i have only seen a handful of artists actually compose a story off of their live material because they programmed it for the dancefloor instead of just hitting play in the same order as their albums.

i think there should be both at parties, the dj's are crucial though because they can help expose lots of different artists that are not billed on the lineup. plus it adds variety to your set, rather than playing the same stuff for an hour or two.           We are all family. We put the fun in disfunctional.

Hey Everyone,

Nice replies!! I posted this topic because I just happened to wonder what peoples feelings were about the scene at the moment. As in most cases on this forum you get great postings without the bitchy slagging off you see on other forums...nice to see!!!

My take on it is that the scene is probably all the healthier for a balance between live acts and dj's(who are non-artists). I suppose its the old story of getting the balance right and the quality level right(for both artist live performance and dj).

I like the comment about telling a story through the set, whether its the artist or dj, IMHO this is how it should be....taking the dance floor on a journey, and to do that right you can't have every track you are going to play laid out in order in advance... you've got to read the dance floor for sure. Maybe this is easier for the dj's but IMO the artists playing live sets should be striving to achieve this as well.

I suppose at the end of the day quality will rise to the top!!!!
