All good djs do get noticed and work alongside record labels for sure

eg bizou (France) for Parvati Records

So what is the question??

Dj's can find there own parties to play at, its the artists that don't want to share their music... well, thats how it seems to me.. i've been trying to find a home (label) from outside of montreal to help them promote upcomming albums by playing out tracks before there release (to hype up the party people and give them some forsight on whats up and comming), but most of them don't want to collaborate with dj's (famous or not, you have to start somewhere)..

I kinda find this sad in a way, buts thats probably because im still looking for a label open-minded enough to work together with....

I think in many cases, the promoters of some party's dont think in show the dj's that don't have label, only to win cash, or only to still the same people in the party's , I think that promoters have to show some dj's that dont have labels, but have a good sound in your parties with others dj's and project's that have labels....
We need promoters with Open Mind.
Thanks.

man this is because labels cannot trust in a lot of people with the actual filesharing situation, from psyclon records point of view i can tell you the recluting process is first seen the dj playing, check his/her skills and after a long trust process not only with the sharing thing but as person which we see could be usefull for the label. its a long process and i think is more or less the same in all labels           http://soundcloud.com/portable-disaster-unit

About the filesharing situation.. well, every dj wants to be as unique as possible right?, and to be unique, you have to have YOUR sounds.. sounds that no-one else has.. so why would a dj share unreleased tracks, to open opportunities to other dj's to get there hands on the track, then play them at parties, when the whole point is to have tracks that most others DONT have..?

i can understand how artists can be scared that this might happen, but sometimes you just have to trust in trance i guess..

i can speak for myself in saying that i'd not ever give/share an unreleased track with others.. not even to my best friend or my mother.. hehehe..           "VA - REWIRED" OUT NOW !! (techtrance invasion) ---> http://forum.isratrance.com/viewtopic.php/topic/86303/forum/9

A label is basically a record company, and its purpose is to release music. Some labels also produce parties (called 'label parties'), where they introduce their new sounds or just make a party for the sake of fun - but this is not mandatory.

A few points:
Most label DJs are there not because of their DJing skills, but because of their contribution to the label as A&Rs (Artist&Repertoire managers), PR managers, booking agents or simply by friendship and long-term relations with the label manager. The fact that they DJ as well is a positive side-bonus - some do it better, some less.

In our scene, where the weight of the DJ is nothing comparing to the weight of the LIVE act, it is hard to promote a DJ for bookings - everybody is always interested in live gigs so a label DJ is considered to be a 'bonus'.

One bonus of being a label DJ is indeed an inside view on the label's musical arsenal - a label DJ is working in side and with the label's artists and is updated on new music comming from the label, so when booked he can promote that music and introduce it to the crowd. A strong label can help with booking deals, but that depends.

as to filesharing - giving away upcomming label music is about basic economy: we give unreleased tracks to people, tomorrow they are on the net and no point of releasing it anymore.

Cheers,

The best way to be a label DJ, is to start a label and then DJ for them.

All the label DJs I know either release on the label or are good friends with the people who run the label. What Helen is saying is that first you need to work very hard for a long time establishing a real trust with a label before they'd let you represent them.

If you seriously want to play for a record label, I would suggest beginning to put on parties and flying over the people who run that label. Once they know you, and also once the local scene knows their music, they will be more responsive to allowing you to respresent them.
