hi fellows again...

i had the idea to setup something like a compressor behind the masterchannel of the digital dj/liveact-set. with the goal that if i mix two basslines too strong the compressor will keep the signal down and secures the system from an ugly bassboost. means that i had to use a multibandcompressor which only compress the sub-frequences. does anyone of you allready use such a setup? i also think that some pioneer-mixers have something like that included, it just sounds like if you mix two basslines together. i want to copy that setup into my liveset, too. i use ableton live so it would be easy to put a c4 into the masterchannel.
any experiences?

cheers

I'm a bit split about this issue.
It can be both good and bad.

It's good because you will have less need to adjust the EQ's on the mixer to tweak each track, and like you said you avoid getting it to sound overly bassy when mixing.

The bad thing is though that since the track more than likely is already mastered it's already processed with a multiband or at least some limiter.
And the PA will also have a limiter built in.
So although you can be a bit more sloppy with the EQing you have to be more careful with the volume on the mixer.
To have a track limited three times before it hits the speaker really is not a great thing for the soundquality.

So if it's worthwhile depends on..
What material you are playing ie. if it's very hard mastered already or can do with a bit more limiting without getting screwed up.
How the PA is set up and if you can play loud enough without hitting the limiter in the PA rack.

For a liveset I would use a multiband, but I stopped doing so for DJ'ing myself and just ensure that all the tracks I have is propely mastered already, which means mastering demos yourself before the set.
And I use killswitches when I'm mixing to make sure there is not to much bass.
