Over more than 13 years of non-stop mixing and producing, HELL has been refining and enriching his definition of music – not least of all by giving it a platform and a creative refuge with his electronic music label International Deejay Gigolos.
Now Hell returns with a Best Of Hell compilation - Größenwahn 1992-2005 / Monotonie Durch Automation - NY Muscle Interpretationen, a double CD retracing his complex artist career and his understanding of modern electronic music.
With this ‘Best Of’, Hell teaches us a lesson in hard-funking electro-house music and sheds a light on his personal vision of it, as a marriage between Body Art and Art of Mind. And in contrary to all those Best-Ofs where the tracks are either randomly or chronologically sorted, without any hidden purpose except the desire of making more money, in contrary to all those Best Ofs that people buy for one song out of twenty, DJ Hell selected his tracks thoroughly in the aim of teaching us the recent history of electro-house music and sharing with us his philosophy of music and dance.
In this Best Of he manages to create a very personal atmosphere, varying between minimal and dark pieces of house music, and his latest tech-house hits taken from his album N.Y. Muscle. Moreover, Hell offers up a bunch of previously unreleased edits of his tracks, such as Like This (2005) or Allerseelen and finally you have a very hard rocking new version of Tragic Picture Show that will prove to anyone that house music and rock’n’roll are far from incompatible.
Since the beginning of his career, Hell has ridden a wave that dropped him at the top, a wave of change that gave his music his personal touch, making him a real electronic pioneer, one of those who ten years ago helped define the sound that we listen to in clubs today.
Hell opens this anthology with his classic track My Definition of House, a stunning piece of dark minimalism infected with bouncy analogue rhythms, as if furious 808s and 909s took control of the dancefloor and this grand opening enables Hell to give us a very important reminder: house is designed for dancing. Hell’s second lesson in this philosophy of music comes with Eat More House, Baby and its raw electronic riffs and his early techno hit Take A Shot. Then comes the classic Suicide Commando from his Munich Machine album, whose coloured minimalism wrapped around an electro-vocoder voice contrasts with the cold minimalism of This Is For You, and the tech-house dancefloor killer Keep On Waiting featuring Erlend Oye (Kings Of Convenience) and his sensual and disillusioned voice.
A new edit of Like This quickens the pace and then the minimal techno-bomb Dieser Momente Werden Nicht Verloren Wie Tränen Im Regen (originally released in 1997 on Sativa Records) scowls with a dark energy whilst DJ Naughty edits of one of HELL’s early works My Life Is Hell, whose darkness is amplified with deep minimal acid waves. And to finish this music lesson with Brio, HELL unleashes the rock’n’roll demon inside of him with his previously unreleased alternative version of Tragic Picture Show and lets us fall into the depths of despair with Alan Vega’s vocals on Listen To The Hiss. This brooding atmosphere is finally softened with the sensual voice of Billie Ray Martin singing her torch song sadness in NY Muscle’s moment of sweetness Je Regrette Everything.
The second CD is a bonus disc with new interpretations of N.Y. Muscle. Tiefschwarz, Peter Kruder, Abe Duque, Dominik Eulberg, Dave Clarke, Adriano Canzian, Ricardo Villalobos, Radio Slave, Superpitcher, Jesper Dahlbäck and Tomas Andersson utilised their talents to give N.Y. Muscle a new breath of life making it a must-have for all electronic fans and avant-garde music freaks.
Aside from his own productions, Hell remains as busy in 2005 as ever. From numerous mind-blowing remixes for DJs and producers such as hip hop superstar P.Diddy with the techno bomb Let’s Get Ill and the forthcoming hit Jack U (featuring Felix Da Housecat) to working with Grace Jones in remixing I’ve Seen That Face Before and being asked by The Pet Shop Boys to re-touch West End Girls, Hell has simply carried on doing what he wants to do. He mixed and released the TDK Time Warp compilation Acid Rocks, the International Deejay Gigolo compilation 8 and for the 50th anniversary of Playboy a special mix called Hellboy gathering together classic italo-disco. And lest we forget one of his most ambitious works to date, a 12” series project called My Definition of House. It will feature 20 all-time house classics and will be put together on a DJ Hell mix CD after 10 vinyl releases.
To cut a long story short, we should simply thank Hell for his megalomania. His constant dissatisfaction, his ambition and his desire of power. Nowadays, Hell seems to be more suave and smooth – maybe the time of punk freak-outs is over, maybe not. But on this best-of collection we get a taste of the old-school Hell along with the new. Some of the original street techno power - along with the electro house and the champagne, the sexuality and the fashion - that shows there is still a deep current of indulgent, raw energy that keeps Gigolo burning.
