I now have pretty much resolved that i want to DJ Psytrance because i love it so much. But I know nothing about turntables or mixers. Can someone give advice to a newbie DJ? I heard Technics turntables are the best...but they are also the most expensive it seems. What makes turntables or mixers good? What turntables should I buy? What kind of mixer will i need? Please give any personal opinions or advice on the matter.
P.S. what do u think of using a Labtop to mix music from cds or mp3s...in conjuction with 2 turntables? |

short and simple. don`t buy a turntable that is not technics SL1200/1210 or the turntables vestax made in the last 2 years. as simple as that the other brands don`t have a strong enough motor or use a belt.
as for a mixer it depends if u want to use it only at home to practice - i would buy a vestax numark or any other good mixer. if u want it for party i would say pioneer djm500/600. |

why is it a bad idea? If you control it like an expert and have good software why not? |

cos your comp. might crash, moreover its not professional to mix with mp3s and software, for home use is OK but definately not in an event ! that will just be a laugh..

i think it's cheating... i mean moving a crossfader with a mouse ? where's the fun in that ? previewing tracks ? why not just play a mixed cd ? nothing like a good hardware mixer :) only prob' is the $$$ ! |

you can use midi controller if you want to hold a slider in the hands :-) this makes it more "real", but still windoze crashes, and the real mixer is not :-) [though.. if you're in open air... the generator can fail :-)] |

I would defiantly not fade in with a mouse... i would only speed up the music or slow down as needed. The reason I would bother? Because some of my favorite music i cannot find on vinyl. I find that unacceptable. And I would use a Macintosh. they never crash...... All new ideas are laughed at, so that is not a decisive factor to me... in a few decades we might think it is primitive to not having a computer assist in performance. Think about it. Things change. |

i agree with you about Mac [it still does crash sometimes], but still external controllers will help: a controller box etc. and when human kind in a few decades will survive demographic explosion .... :-) i don't know whether we will be busy with computers or just providing ourselves with enough food and furs for the next winter. peace :-)))) |
