Happy New Years to all, and those who enjoyed the party at the ranch, the party was great.
I would like to state my disappointment with the lack of diversity presnted in muscal style at parties, it seems everything is now dominated by full-on, as has been happening for a while, one dj after another, spiining the same, same bpm, same grooves, i start to feel like a lab rat under some kind of crazy experiment.
What happened to progressive psytrance and other sub-genres, there is a lot of diversty in the scene, I don`t understand why the music at parties should become so non-diversified, would it be too difficult to have different styles according to time of day, like full-on at night, groove in the morning and some progreesive in the afternoon??
This is pretty much the same thing that I`ve seen happening in other parts of the world and I`m sure other people feel the same way.
tks for the space

I see the same thing all the time in the NW as well. Everyone like to spin the main nighttime slot so they all play the same full on sound. after 8 hours of full on I want to KILL the dj, and I like the stuff. Promters need to book people that know how to play to a crowd and not just for themselves.

Did you feel there was a lack of this diversity at the Green Sector Party? Or are you just making a general statement? just wondering =)           http://soundcloud.com/djkiva

the answer is different prevelent styles in different regions, and or organizer taste.

In the west, Full on is the more popular style, where as the east seems to like progressive more.
In california, if you play progressive anytime after 1 am or before noon, youll kill a dance floor. Ive seen it happen many a time. slower bpm music is best reserved for warm up djs, and wind down djs.
Thats not to say how it is elsewhere or even how it should be, but catering to the overall general crowd, thats the status quo

Also certain organizers cater to different sounds.
Know whos party your going to, and whos playing.
Dont expect a dj to change his established style based on what you think he should be playing. Most of these guys have a style range they play where in they play there best and most comfortable. If its a producer, then expect them to play mostly their own stuff, and other music of a similir level.

Its more the organizers responsibility to put a act where they should be than the act to play for said slot. Most full on djs are that, where as most progessive djs are that.

In the end, it all comes down to be a prepared party goes and knowing who you are going to see.

I also feel it is very tough to find good DJs who can play a range of sounds. Also sets are usually too short (2hrs) to bring a storyline.

Also the amount of releases for full on swamp the market, as oppose to dark, progressive or any other style of psy trance.

Man do I ever wish I had this problem!!!

I prefer the full-on style, and can respect differences in taste, but I can't find any full-on to save my life in Boston and surrounding areas. All of the parties here are progressive from start to finish.

Unfortunately, now I have to buy a ticket and fly to CA just to get any of the music that I am into. As you can imagine this makes partying an expensive endeavor. I know that there are some shows in NYC, but after factoring everything in, it is actually cheaper for me to fly to CA to see an act.

Indeed
What I`m putting forth in this analysis is not the difference in taste, my taste vs. anybody else`s. I`ve seen the same happen with progressive where you have progressive for the whole of the party, which can be equally tedious.
Usually we are pretty fried during the night and that time is good for pounding agressiveness, full-on, during the day I feel the need for something a bit more trippy and hypnotic. Since we are discussing musical taste, there is hardly anything final I can say. Maybe i could make a parallel to it! Try putting on some music you really like, and playing the same same thing all day, I figure you`d be bored by then..I think I`ve made my statement.

I agree, it is incredibly aggravating. In fact, this homogenization of sound is a prime reason why I simply don't bother going to many events any more. What aggravates me as a DJ is when promoters require that full-on be played... and since I don't usually play full-on, I get far less gigs. People seem to have a VERY difficult time wrapping their heads around one simple concept - and that is one of diversity. I am persistantly met with edgy apprehension that I would spin old school Goa, techtrance, progressive, full-on, suomi-style, and all sorts of weird fringe material and not just stick to one "signature style". Promoters exhibit a failure of understanding as well, honing in on one small slice of psytrance and pumping that at all hours of their events regardless of timelyness (hint: Parasense et al is not fun for 6 hours straight). The successful musical formula is really quite simple to construct. Start with one thing and change it up many times as the night progresses! Where you fit what can be chosen to taste but the really important thing for any party is: CHANGE IT UP!

Ah, a gripey post
