hey! i hv been told by a friend that dithering kind "corrects" some errors made by distortion, when u use a lot etc..
The thing is, i hv bounced lots of tracks using Logic 5.5, but with no dithering aplied. My friend told me that i should hv chosen the first option , (POW 1).. Now I am too lazy to do all the bounces again (also because then i would hv to "master" all of them again too), and i am going to play in a party in a couple of days.. So , will this dittering function make a difference that becomes relevant to bounce everything again before go performing at the party? Or it is no big deal, i could do it later or even leave it undone (no dithering aplied)?
I appreciate if u give me some hints! thx a lot!

afaik, dithering is just used when quantizing down, for example from 24 to 16bit, at the end of mastering...the dithering adds low noise to make the quantising smoother as far as I know...

so no, I wouldnt bounce everything down again           https://soundcloud.com/hazak

if you don't have time to do it before the next party, then you don't have time to do it...

is it likely that everyone will stop dancing and say 'hey - Yantra's tracks aren't dithered! BOOOO!!! we're going home!'? probably not... but i'm sure you want to get things perfect, right? so in future, yes go back and dither.

as i understand it dithering applies noise in a controlled random fashion which helps us perceive an undistorted signal when the bit depth of a signal is reduced. but bear in mind that most often this is performed by the mastering engineer... and is not something you should be doing as a separate process when rendering a project. lots of people would only dither with specialist plugins in soundforge etc. once a track is in stereo wav file.

from what i know dithering with noise shaping can be used only once ( the last at the end of mastering, cause it rise the noise floor if used more times i guess ) but you can use ditering without noise shaping before if you need to go from floating point to integer (doesn t happen usually )

Dithering should only be used when reducing the bit-depth for whatever. You need to apply the correct kind of dither for the bit-depth you're going to end up at.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering
