Do you use Dithering at the same stage of (pre)mastering or do you first master than dither?

So only one time rendering or twice?
Than ,not that important but what are you favourite dithering plug ins?

Also if there are many plug ins ,for example a maximizer that has a dithering option - is it better to use it while maximize or better to take attention to dithering seperately after the first eq, compression maximizing limitation etc process?
I know dithering should be done only one time ,just wondering what for are dithering features in compressors etc..when you would take atlest a maximizer at the end.If not dither it even after all at the very end ,after premastering chain process, fades, maybe bit silence at end or beginning and after dc removing.

Last but probably not least, what other mastering software are good besides wavelab?
I think you can do mastering with soundforge but never tried this there.
Are there advantages or disadvanteges ?

1 - dither always when you have bit reduction. i only dither when mastering cause before that i dont make any bit reductions (32-bit floating till mastering).

2 - voxengo's elephant built-in dithering.

3 - sequoia/samplitude, sadie...

4 - soundforge is lame imho. you don't need if you have wavelab.           https://www.facebook.com/BiijahRecords

I'm a fan of Wavelab, but I'm curious since I find the experimenting in premastering very interesting.
From what I've read about soundforge it seems to be a powerful tool..
--but I don't get the mastering process there.
I understand dithering as fine quality noise adding to mask possible warpings transients because of converting the bit rates - yes I always do it only one time @ the end only for this purpose when from higher rate to lower.
When mixing I put a small compression on the master but there for instance never with dithering when audio bounce etc.

But recently I consider if it's not useful to put some dithering seperately on voice files for example..when there are calm passages it might be useful even in the mixing process...

Cheers for your interesting points Diogo C..2 and 3 espescialy.
I use L3 for dithering (and a bit maximizin) - I would rather prefer some sonnox but it is only for the slots above..

I master in Soundforge, and use Cubase for I/O and recording the mastered versions. I love the plug-in chainer and the easy access you have to parameter automation; my mastering chain would not fit in the Wavelab master section. It's clear and logical and extremely rapid to use once you know the shortcuts. For plain audio editing I much prefer it to Wavelab, although Wavelab rocks when it comes to actually assembling an album.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

wow..I was sure you master in Wavelab..
yeah you can not have more than this 8 slots in Wavelab wich really lacks a bit.
I must get a bit more busy with Soundforge ,sounds so interesting.
