hello,

just finished a track with last volume edit in 24 bit. if the track was good enough, at first sight i would send this version that sounds ok on my monitors to someone to master.

but when checked it on my hifi its different. not good. so i adjusted it and changed the mix that sounded good at first hand at my monitors according to the sound of the hifi. feels a bit tricky like i cant trust my monitors.

when i listened the first mix through my hifi amplifier and speakers the bass sounds a bit like mud and also some synthsounds are too loud. changed a bit volumes and in the finalizer plug and bounced to 24 bit.

sounds then 24 bit good both on hifi and monitors. then i want to put it on a cd so use some L3 because of some tiny peaks and then i am a bit puzzled how to dither. now i put the L3 settings on 16 bit and through export SX3 on 16 bit i bounce it.

when i monitor this 16 bit bounced version the bass is singing a little bit less then the 24 bit like some harmonics disappeared, subtle change. i hear this most on the hifi. but also a little on my monitors. is this normal with dithering?

when i burn it to cd with nero and play it on my hifi with an old cd player the bass now lost some contour.

maybe i did not dither the smart way? would like some advice. i know do-yourself- mastering is not advised. but i think its nicer to put a cd in a friends player and let it already sound a bit like mastered then play a not so good sounding version with the comment that after mastering it will sound great. just more motivating.
and anyhow how many (of my) tracks reach mastering? so maybe someone has dithering advice.

and what about adjusting the track according to something that you dont hear in your monitors? (i only really hear it on hifi).

maybe an experience from someone else with also bluesky mediadesk can be usefull. thnx.

Don't use the Waves dither - turn it off (Dither mode: None) and use the dither insert effect that comes with Cubase as the final thing on your master insert chain, see if that makes a difference. Er, assuming you're using Cubase.
