guys what do you think about detuned or maybe i should say dissonant(not sure it s the right term) sounds and their effect on us . to me it s like they can really bring fear to the listeners or get them hooked into the music , i m thinking about these dissonant chords that sound like using bad notes for example, or scary athmosphere too..or synth pacth that sound like it s broken...lately i have experimentated on making these sounds but i find it hard to intergtate them in my music cause they just sound not in tune but i love their effect on me.
any tips and tricks with all this and maybe a more technical way to describe it ?
they sound can be used in movies too to scare and bring suspens ,strange it work that well, it can really hook me in a scene.i can uplaod a sample if you dont get what i mean.

Yes detuning oscs is cool, also lfo to pitch = coolnes...

bout the chord thing you can try to stay in key but use diminished / augmented chords they can bring the spookyness somtimes... play with normal chords but alter semitones of the not tonic note, or try crazy progression that sound dissonant on some chords but other resolve to satisfying sensation.

gut luck

A good thing that can make the scary effect of the sound better is placing the sound very close to the listener or "inside your head". ( No reverb, no delay etc... )           http://soundcloud.com/aedem

for example a pad with detuned saw + unisson and some reverb to make the effect more obvious can sound rather dreamy depending the chords, you can get a sound that feel like you are in a perfect dream ... but chnage one note to one that is not in tune or "correct" the dreamy sounding pad will sound like something coming out of a nightmare if you find the good notes . that the effect i m talking with dissonant sounds with strange pitch. the sounds to make listeners scared or feel anxious , or to hook them often sound dissonant in movie ,games..it just have bad vibes on us and it s perfect to get anxiety to listeners or maybe it s just me lol but its very used in sound design.

I just suggested to try chords that are relative to your track's root note but alter some of the other tones of the chord (other than the root) to create that feeling of uneasiness so that way it goes dissonant but remains harmonic to your track.

i m thinking to make some music with only dissonant sound but i have a fucking hard time to integrate them cause of evolving pitch or straneg tune to bring the effect desired. have to try your tips it should help for the chords.

dissonant are not music imo..just noise...
one or other dissonant element, in a little small portion can be good, ok...but a music made all by dissonance??? or also a constant dissonant phrase... seens like no music for me...           www.psychowave.net

it can be music imo, i have made disonnant leads that make great melodies but it s just sounding weird ,same for pads but it s sound very trippy so in a way it s just strange sounds on top of a beat you re right about that, but many old muscians will tell you the same about psytrance that it s not music .
the aim is to create "something" psycho active ,music or noise it dont matter much.
