nord lead is nothing more than software running on a computer. this hardware vs software thing is an illusion. both are softsynths.

That's the theory and i used to believe it. Just try a real Nord synth and you'll be amazed. Same goes for the Virus(|Powercore). It's also software, just like the other VSTi's, but it's just from a totally different universe, sonically. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, so try some hardware Nordic spacejelly and tell me what you hear.

I think you're wrong on the Powercore Virus.
the Powercore is designed for just musical plugins and from what I've read, there is no difference at all between the hardware and Powercore Virus.
It even says that the Powercore card has exactly the same Dsp's as the physical Virus!

just find someone with a hardware nord g2, and then download the software g2 emulation from clavia, they sound EXACTLY the same because clavia wrote the software for both, dont matter what its running on.

Thanks for the info. The G2 demo does actually sound like a nord.

that's exactly what he meant - that the powercore sounds different than other software plugins because it has dedicated DSP.           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

A dsp executes n-bit instructions just like any other computer. only difference is speed. If u have more dsps u can do more complex stuff.
A dsp DOES NOT have a "sound" of its own.
A dsp is just a processor that executes instructions repeatedly to some specifications. thats it. It works on pure data, and buffers, then outputs that to a sound buffer(not on the dsp). If there is code for filters in the dsp then it will filter. No "hardware" filter. Just software running that reproduces "filtering" according to some software routine.

But check out the G2 modular demo. It sounds fab. definitely not like dsicovery.

Thanx.

Well, that's almost what i meant. I meant that although both synths are software, they somehow sound better. I'm sure this has to do with the algorithms that are used that are more powerful (what else could it be). Of course it can also be the power suggestion
( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suggestion ), but i certainly can tell the difference.

By the way, making the software/hardware comparison for myself has tought me that it's good to trust your ears and not your (or someone else's) theory without empirically testing it. I'm sure that in the near future VSTi's will see the light that will sound better than the Nord or the Virus, but until now i haven't heard them.

one thing that you need to consider when comparing hardware to software is that presets on the hardware are designed to sound phat and full so that when you demo them at the music store you are more tempted to buy it

this is a well known fact in the synth industry...

to accurately compare you would need to strip all effects off of the patch first, and any layering, so that you are comparing something that is really on par with the soft synth

Bill of Cosmosis has some interesting points about hardware vs software on his site

i don t agree, just with a init patch hardware synths sound better(maybe not the virus)and dry the difference is huge.it s true you dont need hardware synth anymore, why? cause the standart today is a trance with no soul, listen to some good 96/97 trance music and you ll see all the leads were sounding better than today(or maybe different but with life)H2o have ruined the trance in a way haha

i think that its just a matter of "hands on"

in the old days you did live recordings of your tweaks nowdays most people automate within the sequencer by drawing automation curves, this can make things a little static.

also it seems that some hardware has a more warmth to their sounds, especailly the old analogs and some VA, i dont have much experience with hardware synths, i own a yamaha An1X and it can sound real warm and edgy..

if you speak about real analog synths compared to softsynths then maybe i can agree, but not hardware synths which are dsp powerd. though the nordlead is a synth of its own and alot has to do with the construction and quality of the components.

i dont think that synths are the fault for soul-less music, its the societys and this hectic world we live in, everything is like fast food.. this takes away the soul.. artists having a rush releasing new tracks. in the old days there was another climate and the joy of creating something worthwhile seemd to be stronger. but that is pure speculation.

i don t know really, the sound of the nordlead have something the vsti don t have, more soul ,for me vst are lifless, there is no feeling in a vst compared to hardware synth and even more if it s analog, that why i m talking about trance with no soul, recently the gbu album have this soul i m talking about and most albums are missing today,to me it s the gear used.

who is GBU? i would like to check that out. I actually totally agree with you. Soul is probly a good word for what VST lacks. I have always thought it more as "character". You can try to program the same exact patch on a virus and on a microwave xt but its not going to sound the same because of the synths unique character or "soul".
Something else that is interesting is that the sounds from 96/97 even predate most hardware synths used today, no one is really using roland, kurzweil, early e-mu stuff anymore.

"The Good the Bad and the Ugly" which are Dimitri Narkov, Serge Souque (Total Eclipse, The Deviant, Typhoon etc) and Frederic Holyszewski (Dado, Deedrah, Transwave etc). Three big names in the scene combining forces!

No but I use Waldorf, Alesis, Access, Korg, Yamaha etc. I still miss my K2600 I had to sell for financial reasons.

PS: I stopped watching the video half way through. The idea is good but the presentation is soooo booooring...

So this calls for a new plugin called "Soul VST". I bet it'd sell millions!

GBU sounds sick!! Undertow where can i hear your music? I remember you use to post sick music on the dream list years back.
I want to start producing again with ancient hardware. What alesis synth you using? I'm going to grab an e-mu morpheus to start on ebay for some zplane action.
You still have an FS1R? Still not sure if that synth is worth the time to program.
