NikC - those ears needs to be traind if your arent gifted with it...
also for a untrained ear it can be hard to judge a melody if there is lots of things going on... and the timbre of the sound can also affect how well you perceive the pitch...
so the old-fashioned ears needs practise before they can judge such things, if like i said they havent been traind or gifted...
i think its good to use a tuner in combination of your ears if you dont know a certain pitch.. working active with this will gain ones understanding of the relations of the tones..
other than that i think that the ears should do the job.. but its easy for somebody that is traind to say this... that is my point |

I see your point too guys - sorry if I seemed abit brash with my post...
I can see why using an electronic tuner is useful too (even though I've never used one) especially when there are many sounds going on etc.
Also in an age now of quarter tones and cent tones - can be difficult to judge exactly whether a note is slliiightly sharp, or slightly flat.
Oh well, maybe one could say:
Ears first, Electonics second... as the most important thing is that it sounds good - not that it is perfectly in tune.

i say invest in one..
but you can use your voice aswell... still its some years of practise before you can sing the right pitch...
sing after me... C D E F G A B C now try this,
C c# D d# E F f# G g# A a# B C
man if i could pull these tones off with my voice i would probably be a choire boy lol..

i produce with a P3, onboard soundcard and 384mb ram lol
next week i'm going to buy a new pc, then a soundcard, then a pair of monitors (cause my main problem is not the melodys but the mixing) and only then a keyboard.... still a long way to ahead... (barak - still a long way ahead killer track hehe) |
