i have a track that i want to remix. it starts with 8 bars of the synth that i want... i can sample it without problem. my problem is how do i know the scale of this melody? i don't have a midi keyboard so doing by hand is really tuff. is there some way?
thanks in advance

You can use a guitar tuner ,any guitar tuner with mic builded inside,u just sing the root of the track in to the mic of tuner and u have the note ,chek again if its da note and you got it,and finding the root ,you should hear the tonic and then sing it or thru listening you can tune yourself to the root and sing it ,listen to a bass and try to here the root,,,

good luck,

BTW , you have some online pianos you can use also,or you can post a sample of that melody here.

The melody was probably built on the bassline fundament. If you can't recognize the bassline note, just play each note - using your mouse - untill u find it.

Once you find the note, finding the scale is rather easy and you should be able to play that melody in no time.

nop it's a house\techno classic... the bassline is one note only and it's heavyly lowpassed so it will be really tough to indentify the note.

honestly e-motion. u should be able to do it by ear by scanning thru the notes, even if the bass is lowpassed.

Try C-tuner if you dont have a real tuner.. and C-tuner will probably be better in this case...

http://www.samplerchan.com/

put it on the channel and if the bass or melody plays alone you will probably be able to identify it...

but like john_c say, you should be able to scan it by ear if you got some reference...

and i dont mean that you should identify the sub by ear,,, but the melody..

make a patch that sounds close to the sound of the melody and sit infront of your midikeyboard and take your time

this is a good time for you to practise intervals, e-motion... i know i need to aswell...

I don't know if it works for the purpose as I haven't tried the VST myself but Antares Autotune -- isn't it a software being able to perform the work you ask for? I have no clue really but perhaps worth checking it out if you can't trust your ears...            Aural transmissions from the deep forests of Sweden

Yep, midi-guitar! that's interesting, where can you find it?
My brother bought an electronic violin but isn't midi enabled...           --
