It can harm the attack of each note. It can add distortion.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

I use 2 limiters on bass sometimes. 1 to limit the signal so all the notes are the same volume, then 1 to raise the signal.

I don't know if it's that big of a deal, but I don't think it added any distortion.

Most people sample basses I guess? so that each note is the same strength.           www.musicproductionnatural.com || www.facebook.com/djamoeba | facebook page

2 limiters = nonsense (imho)
or what is the advance you see in that?

rather use (sidechained) compression.

and i really think: dynamics are wanted

and limiter on master output: it's useful for parties with a bit sensible neighbors ...          http://www.myspace.com/realtimeproject

Velocity still changes the way the bass sounds, just they're all the same level.           www.musicproductionnatural.com || www.facebook.com/djamoeba | facebook page

well, my way is sidechain compression in bass and then in kickbass group i use waves l2 to get the same level in kick and bass

I like to let the transient through before compressing + limiter's ratio for compressing a trance bassline, is too high for my liking.
What synth are you using that has so wild level variations on different notes?

to me the most important thing for _fast-psy-bassline_ is retrigger. if synth has no retrigger just sample notes. it will give you constant levels and the notes gonna sound solid.
for other types of basslines, in techno, or progressive, i would leave oscilators flow. it gives really nice warm and live feeling.

That's a thing that needs talking about. People didn't really used to sample bass notes before that domestic post, yet their basslines, sounded fine.
And why shouldn't someone leave the oscillators flow and give trance basslines a warm and nice feeling as well?
we have compressors and we are triggering a synth, which has a far smaller dynamic range than a bass guitar, even with the oscillators running free...

are we the victims of what some big artist said to the point where we absolutely have to start our bass synth oscillator, from the same point of the cycle, without even asking why?

i think the big levels from note varitions can be solved by equalization with notch filters removing the frequencies that make the note sound louder...

sry jizy & all, getting off topic,
but what does the retrigger do?
and I know about free-flow option on the oscilaters but what does it do?

retrigger is play the note from the begin or the value you want (attack) example ..the sound of bass have 4miliseconds....every time you play one note will start sound at 0miliseconds in every note, this way will sound always the same in every note
