Is there an option for direct from disk streaming in cubase for audio tracks? Is it just on all the time? Can you turn it on and off, and if so where? I can't find anything about it. |

cubase alway streams from Harddisk. Check the performance meter, there is also one for Diskusage.
Usually it's hard to bring the HD to it's limits. If you anyway do, but don't have many tracks or high sample rates your HD may have a problem... maybe it's running in PIO mode instead of DMA...
If you want the audio coming from memory you have to put it into a sampler and disable DFD there. They usually have that option.
  Most of my music for you to download at:

well I just found it strange that my disk cache was okay on my laptop with a regular 5400 rpm hard drive but when I put it on my desktop which has a 7200 rpm SATA hard drive it was overloaded. |

well I have already defragged and I get the same thing.
I don't know where to look to check the DMA setting
and I do have multiple partitions but the samples are all on the same partition...unless maybe my temp files are on a different partition I guess I can try and make sure that isn't the case. |

For DMA setting:
Right-click "My Computer" -> Properties
Hardware -> Device Manager
Open "IDE Controllers"
There should be a setting for "Primary" and "Secondary". Open each one and check under the "Advanced Settings" tab.
Both device 0 and device 1 should have "Transfer Mode" set to "DMA if available".
That might be the problem, but maybe not... in general... partitioning hard drives is bad for performance. If you have your system on one partition and samples on another partition on the same drive, that is going to slow things down. The drive arm has to run to one side of the drive to access system stuff, and then run over to the other end to read your samples.
