Usually if your track is going to be processed more you won't want any dithering. Dither just adds a tad bit of noise to the render to cut back on any artifacts. luckily if your mixdowns are good you shouldn't have to worry about dithering anyways, unless of course it sounds better to you.

But to make it simpler. Don't use dither if you plan on mastering your tack after export.

Or if you don't plan on doing any mastering or post production processing render with dither. you can learn more about dithering and what sounds best for what here www.ableton.com/answers/what-is-the-difference-between-the-dithering-options-in-live-s-render-dialogue cheers!           http://soundcloud.com/brentmalik

I don't dither.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

I personally dither anything that's being exported to mp3 but I use a plugin over the software dither as that way it provides better result as software predefined dithering will cut what it feels like where as plugin dither engines will analyse and cut unused bands to turn it into 16 bit audio which is all mp3 and cd quality handles so there is no point having the extra bit depth in the final version but when recording I work in 24 bit and sometimes even 32 bit

If you use it, dithering should be the last process applied before reducing the bitdepth. Ableton's audio engine runs at 32-bit, so if you're exporting a 32-bit file you don't need dither (in fact the option is turned off completely). The benefits of dither are well-established but even so, using it is a choice, as some people just like the sound of raw truncation

As far as I know, Triangular (aka TPDF) or any other shaped dither should be identical in effect whether generated by Ableton or by a separate plugin. Dedicated dither plugins, or the dither options in some limiters, might also offer proprietary or licensed dither algorithms that do interesting things (like Apogee's UV22HR dither which recognises when there is a signal and deactivates itself when the input is silent) but if you can't hear the difference yourself, stick with good old Triangular.

My advice is to always export at 32-bit (no dither) unless you're exporting the final mastered version of your track, in which case export at 16-bit with Triangular dither. IMPORTANT if you're using limiters on your audio channels, make sure dither is turned off on all of them. If you have a limiter in your mastering chain (as the last process!), make your mind up whether to use the limiter's dither or Ableton's dither. DON'T USE BOTH.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

I route the master track to an audio channel and record it in real time... Isn't that the best way for minimising quality issues?           access virus ti,waldorf blofeld, korg microkorg xl, roland sh-201, clavia nord wave, korg kaoss pad 3, DSI Tempest, hohner something...

I'm pretty sure you only need to export in real time when you are using external hardware as part of the mix, or when you want to tweak it as it's going down. There is no quality loss when bouncing down offline.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering
