Hi guys,
So i'm wondering what the general opinion is regarding digital vs CD releases. If you as an artist were offered a digital release, would you rather wait for a CD release instead? I don't think most labels are willing to take the financial risk involved with CD releases anymore.
For those artists who've had digital releases. What sort of sales percentages have you been offered by the label?

Usually a digital release is between 50/50% to 60/40 in the artist favor.

Nowdays it doesn't matter for me. Before i prefered a cd release ofcourse, but now there is such a bigger market on the digital side of sales then it used to. So for me i have no problem just releaseing tracks on the net only as its there it ends up anways cd or not. =)
And yes, 50-50 is pretty common there aswell.
cheers!

There are some interesting debates in this topic (or maybe another one) regarding promotion etc.
IMO labels need to step up their promotion and actually invest in proper professional promotion except for the few forum notices which are fine but wont lead to much in the end (except a few gigs here and there). The digital market is new but proper knowledge into promotion and marketing is the factor that will set the professional labels apart from the amateurs.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I think it's pretty pointless to print out thousands of CD's when you can only manage to sell a few hundred copies at most. So i guess digital distribution is the future. 50% of sales seems to be pretty decent enough.
I would also have preferred to have a CD release but i guess those days are fading fast.

obviously from a compiler's point of view I enjoy that little bit of an extra creative process that goes into making the artwork and getting to hold the CD in your hand if it's your own work is really something special...
on the other hand it's just gonna collect dust while I play from my laptop...the sentimental value is there, it's just not practical anymore

So where are digital releases usually available, besides beatport? It would be interesting to get some figures about average sales of a typical digital release.

The cd is a nice "business card" to hand out at gigs and stuff but it does put you in a predicament. No names mentioned but if you want to sell a cd you have to lay off the digital sale at least 30 days which means the tracks will be on the net before they are actually released digitally which in the end will mean less sales digitally.

Demoniac (I think it was him) mentioned that if you rtelease a CD, people will maybe buy the digital downloads, if you release the same material only as download nobody buys it, I tyhink it might have to do with Psyshop, that many people orient themselves as to what is available there. Not sure about the whole thing...

The cd is still number one medium for music.
Digital sales had a little impact in 2009, but now the numbers are joke.
People are tired from the endless digital releases and mass spaming, since it is the fastest way to promote yourself today...
Cd will still be alive in the future, because it represents a quality work made from the label, that costs a lot of money, so the risk to release a bad cd is very low.
Also is good for carrying with you, and giwe it as a promo or sell it or do whatever you wan't.
The cd lasts longer, nobody cares about downloaded files, they end up in the recycle bin, deleted while formating your hard disk, or the cd that is burned is damaged much more easilly then the original cd box.
But the combo digi + cd is cool.
Cd's for collectors and digital sales for dj's that have a gig in 30 min and wan't to play new music
Download cards seem like a good idea, but it's kinda funny to sell a card for 10 eu
The future will bring a lot of stuff like realtime wav/flac files streaming, similar to last.fm and youtube, and more oldschool freaks releasing on cassete
Hmm maybe i will make the new compilation on a cassete, i wonder how many people will buy it

Because the cd looks better quality to the people...
Same with music that is being played on parties.
If some new comer has great music and play on a party, people always find complains, it's too fast, it's just noise, cheesy melodies etc...
But the same people dancing on the same music that some well known dj is playing, and had the best times of their life

That depends on what style of music you make and what label you release on.

A cd represents investment and risk on the part of the label and as such it has perhaps more motivation for delivering the goods. The risk is low with a digital release and so is the financial outlay. Question is if it is taken just as serious as a physical release. Personally i find pure digital releases impersonal and not a valid short term medium for me to gain maximum exposure. CD´s last 20 some odd years, but access to a server can be cut off in an instant, see the problem here? Sales are almost irrelevant here as close to nobody can make a living strictly on that (the cue here is exposure and promotion via releases for live gigs etc.) The main point is to get your music to people in whichever form works. Bottomline physical or digital, if your music is the bomb people will notice (i´d still like to have it on CD if it rocks tho)
