yes, it's back again the old debate. But it's a debate worth having
Isn't digital lacking in some way?
Is analogue over-priced (going by the extortionate prices on ebay) and too much non-midi hastle?
But the pro's are still keeping there analogues gear. What's the deal?
Should we reduce our carbon footprint and go soft or is it a hard world of transistors and valves that still have the edge?
What do you think?

When working with natural sound sources i'm sure analog processing is still unbeatable. In electronic music i think it's more a matter of taste and money=). http://soundcloud.com/aedem |

It's a debate worth having?
I think it is time to put this debate aside, as it was for some time now.
Besides, today, analog and digital are good friends, it's not one vs the other. Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

Synoptic,
Your question is meaningless unless your are much more specific. Do you mean as a recording medium? Do you mean for editing? For mixing? Mastering? For processing? And what type of processing? Limiting? Compressing? Equing? Summing? And what type of source material and musical genre are you talking about? etc
For some things analogue is better. For others, digital is better.
Here is what Greg Calbi has to say about it from a mastering perspective:

if it s about synthesis its a matter of taste ,both are good imo but i like more analog (but i never had one ),you can get some feeling with the sounds you ll never get with digital (or it s hard to get them ) it s more like a real instrument to me, more organic.
i was listening to some blacet sound sample and it s really a dream to build one of these, sound is so good , no digital synth can touch this but they can be better for other things ...
synth components of the best sounding analogs are untouched in the digital world imo (osc,filters...)getting the best of both world is the way to go i guess . |

Analog editing generally is a pain in the ass, as far as recording is concerned, really depends on what you are recording... lately I use a Zoom H4 which records digitally, I am very happy with the quality... and of course minimize the noisefloor... distortion generally seems to be better analog, as far as processing is concerned, really depends on what you process and how(see Undertow)... I would love to own a nice analog synth, for some reason the bass seems to be a lot more pronounced and has a stronger presence when made with an analog synth... One of the best bass sounds I ever made came out of a Doepfer...that is until I found Vanguard... so it really seems to depend on the situation you find yourself in...

The only important thing to remember, is that passing from analog to digital and vice versa, should be done with a very good "gate" (converter) - and that's keeping the good friendship

the war is over - these times of peace and harmony!!
