I'd go with the analog sequencer, it sounds smoother

probably every sequencer today is digital except for the analog modulars (though some of the modules are digital too).

In studio I'd use software.

You can slave an analogue sequencer to a midi clock.
Anyway, analog sequencers have their pros and cons. I had one sequencing my modulars for a few days and I got some fine acid sequences that I never bothered to program using Logic (although I definitely could if I wanted to). Analogue sequencers put you in a different mind frame when programming synths and patterns and in general having a tool that puts you in a certain vibe is quite nice.

The cons are obviously the extra cash (for the people that already have Logic/Cubase...etc) and that they take extra space.

element, is that really analog? It sends midi too and it can store presets... What would be a digital sequencer, then?

not any sequencer uses midi.

however, teh term "analog" in analog-sequencer only say that the notevalue can be entered analog. Or in non midi systems you can have a "tone" for each step which dont need to be chromatical tuned.
I never used a maq, so i cant say anything about it for sure, if you can archive those non chromatic stuff with it aswell.
