They sound different.
Same as analog vs digital when it comes to synths.
Digital mixers tend to represent the sound more uncoloured, while on a nice analog desk it can sound even better than the original just going thru a channel.
You can somewhat recreate that colour digitally with some saturation effects, but it will not be exactly the same.
The main advantage with a digital desk is that you have the automation and recall facilities, as well as compressors and fully featured eq on every channel.
If you want a analog desk with those facilities you pay minimum around $100 000.
The eq's and compressor's is many times not so good on the digital desks I tried though.
One thing could be to ge a digital desk, and a decent analog channel-strip. Then you can patch gear thru the strip and record it with some added analog warmth.
Or if you are into a digital solution with good eq and compressors, look into something like the UAD-1 DSP card, or the pulsar with sonictimeworks plugins.
You might need a hardware controller to get hands on control as well, and a box with a bunch of converters to plug your gear into. Better value for money than buying a digital desk I think, but maybe wont fit everyones way of working. |
