hello.

i am curious who is doing their own mastering and on what software.

also, discussing some techniques:

some people put a series of plugins on the master channel as well as individual channels in cubase/logic and do a 'live' mastering session.
this is beneficial: having the option to put individual compressors and EQs on the kick,bass,whatever....however takes a big toll on the cpu, and can cause problems if you start to change levels of the channels afterwards.

others will bounce the track to a stereo file and import that into a seperate 'mastering' arrengement.
ofcourse you no longer have the option of direct control of specific sounds.....just frequencies.
with a stereo mix you can also use 'mastering software' programs such as izotope ozone or IKM T-racks, although i never found these programs very convincing

a simliar approach to the above is bouncing various groups instead of a stereo mix.
you can for instance bounce down a kick+bass track, hihats track, fx track, whatever... you can then apply your favourite dynamics plugs on each group.

cheers

control specific sound or several groups is called mix
mastering is after that in the whole track           www.sattelbattle.com

Mix is what the artists do.
Mastering is what they don't do.

Still - you should try to achieve a mastered sound without any mastering at all. That would be best.

not neccesery Mike...
you wont be suprise to hear that some artists gives away their files to upgrade their sound...
and some artists (that much more pro) do their own mastering...

is there anyone that does their own mastering here?

the techniques i mentioned are actual real techniques, and i was wondering what is most used for psy trance.

another techniques ive heard was to seperate the stereo track into seperate bands and process each band individually before mixing them back.
although i hear this may cause problems with phazing, and i dont have much info on this technique.

hey Mate!

no, no don't separate channels and don't search for a "technique"..Find ur own:

1-buy a very nice pair of monitors (expensive ones, no shit @ 500$)
2-make your track sounding great while adding a comp + Eq in your main Bus.
3-never put too much comp on your bass, kick, etc it'll sound too "deep"
4-my adivice is to find the sound you want to and enhance it with (2) until it reaches -0.1 db.
5-make your mixdown and open it with Adobe Audition, SF, Cool Pro, or?.. etc and look at it, listen to it, analyze it with the included tools.
6-Compare with the music you like and which sounds great on your monitors.
7-you can also add a multi band FFT analyzer on your Bus to have a look on how's is it before mixdown.
8-search on the net for PDF's on mastering/mixdown techniques, there's plenty of nice advices as well!

Yes, there's pro psy artists doing their own mastering: Safi Connection, Domestic, Son Kite, etc ...all great ones!!

Final mastering is to adjust levels between different trax made in different studios to get a nice flow of freq's and levels during the listening of an album.

Cheers!

I do the my mastering alone and i think that the best way of mastering is to make the mastering in the same time you make the song.
I mean to choose from the begining the best drumsounds, bassline, samples, sounds... Everytime i add a new sound on the track i make all the setting, to sound great from the beggining. I compress it, eq and also use freqw. analizer to see if it fix perfectly between the other sounds.
I also start from the begining with some pressets on the master chanell like: stereoimager (always set between 150 - 200 % spread), light compressor, Eq (set as flat - for beggining), and Ultramaximizer (also set as flat). I always use also compressor on Bd, snare and bassline to have a more powerful and clean sound. On Close HH i usualy use a light Alt paning (10 -15% - not too much becouse i have also the streo imager on the master chanell). When the track is ready all i have to do is to make few changes, to adjust the maximizer treshold, to adjust the master eq and to listen the track on as many different sound sistems starting from: profi monitors, home sound sistems to club or multimedia soun sistems.
Ok! those are just few tricks that i use. there are many more.
Anyway, that's the way i think any profesional artist work. I mean i dunno any big name to just play with some soft synths and than to try to make it sound better.
Just imagine Simon Posford playing like a child, making some strange sounds on some cheep software and that trying to mastereing it. Come on !!! This is a job for beginners.
I hope it helps !

BOOM SHANKAR !!!

Here i'm with Mike and Colin.
Music > Mixing > Mastering.
When you do these seperated you put all your soul in production and treat it as art. Artist of electronic music should do two first steps while producing. Mastering should be done to group of songs to achieve better results.

Bullshit.

As for seperate mixing and mastering stages, I keep them seperate but I was reading Posford's page yesterday and he says he mixes into the TC finalizer. So I guess he does mixing and mastering in one go. See what works best for you ...
