Hey just curious as to what ways people automate their vst's in cubase. I have 2 ways but I want to know if anybody has another way or a better way.
1. Automate on the automation channel, downside to this is that the automation isn't near the midi notes so you can't see exactly where you are automating unless you move the midi channel down by the automation channel.
2. Automate directly in the midi channel using cc#'s but this can be a pain because you have to find out what the cc#s are for what in the vsti, since it doesn't just list them there.
Anybody have a better way? |

Yeah, both methods are annoying! I want the automation patterns to be inside the MIDI part. For example when drawing in filter sweeps over a note you need to be able to accurately place it in relation to the note. This means I have to use MIDI CCs but as you said, these are a complete pain in the bumhole because it is often tricky to get the numbers plus they aren't named.
I good trick is to move VST automation channels so that each one is next to the corresponding MIDI channel.. still not ideal though. I also find that my Cubase (sx2.2) has some bugs which seem to scramble up the order and placement of VST instrument output and automation tracks completely randomly. For example I will spend ages looking for my Kontakt automation channel then eventualy find it in a sub folder of one of my Battery channels! Does anyone else get this? |

my advice is - move to sx3, some annoying automation bugs are fixed, and orginize your channels so that the midi, audio & vst channels will be together. for example, you are using the V-station for one of your leads (lead1) and you want to automate both it's chorus feedback and it's volume:
1. Lead1 (MIDI track)
2. Lead1 (Audio Track, containing the volume automation)
3. V-Station (VST Track, containing the chorus feedback automation)
never seperate this three and everything will be orginized and you'll find any automation you need. |

Why not click on the W and move the knob while it's playing?
An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines. |

folder channels help alot, to keep things organized.
if you have SX3, you can also try "edit in-place" in the sequencer, to see the automation lane beside the MIDI notes |

hmm seems like a bunch of simple yet good ideas here. I'll probably just keep all the midi and vst information together and try the In-Place Editor while changing automation. Thanx for the ideas. If anybody else knows a better way please feel free to add, I'm sure we're not the only ones that wish there was a better way. Obviously recording live is easy but sometimes you want to edit more specifically or do something thats hard or humanly impossible, where you have to actually draw in automations yourself. |
