Generally speaking what do you view as the main differences in the mastering process between ambient and psytrance ?

What is usually different in your mastering chain when you master this kind of music ?

never mastered ambient music yet but the aim is the same, you can maybe use less agressive setting for loudness at the expense of softening the sound for less distortion.

tools will totally depends the result wanted and what the track need, but a flexible eq and a limiter is sure to be used in most case and could be enought on quality mix

the style of ambient music make it more propice of using some colorfull analog tools if the guys want color ,rounding the transient is probably not a issu like it can be in psytrance sometimes

like pom says, spectral balance, stereo information and perception are more important in those downtempo styles. i wouldnt say they arent important in other genres too, but here this is spot on. its very subjective how you experience this listening as this will unevitable influence your processing further on. i usually use more diffrent eq's on mids and sides rather then compression (or very gently with attack and release opened up -> 1-2db gr) followed by a touch of soft clipping/limiting to get there. sometimes the sonnox inflator does wonders in this area, beware of distortion on quiet parts -> automation is the trick.
