I love the vibe of Goa trance, its what made me fall in love with this music in the first place...like everything is more "cosmic" a music coming from and for a different universe than our own... yet there is this obsession to put so many leads in, something that is very apparent in the new school side of things (the stuff Ive heard anyway, mostly the Suntrip records stuff).
The old stuff is more relaxed in the "cramming leads in" part.
Anyhow the main difference is that there is more weight on the bare, kick-bassline and groove part in the modern (meaning the last decade) psy-trance and artists are focusing a lot in the drive factor of a track as well as the tripyness with the leads/background atmospheres...etc.
And completely different way of mixing, selection of sounds (especially kick and bassline).
Its all good, in different ways, although I have heard an awful lot of Goa trance since 1994 and love it to bits, I do prefer the modern (not new school Goa) stuff.
I also think that Goa (even if it came first) falls under the psy-trance umbrella and not vice versa. Anyhow its all nitpicking and is of no serious consequence.

goa is generally a bit slower than fullon psy the bass is almost always different than fullon. the kick is also a much softer kick the bass is more of a standard trance bass without a lot of pluck often times. goa is more lush and less harsh sounding. goa just about always has a lead playing, full on your lucky to get a lead at the peak of the track. my opinion, goa is better.

i'd rather say it's the other way round. fullon is between 140-145 while goa is generally 140-150. of course there's enough goa below 140, but at least the goa i listen to tends toward higher bpm. i guess we could say goa has a greater variety of speeds than fullon

to me goa is a bit like full on, it can be almost cheesy, psy is a other sound, it s not about the year it have been released.about the tempo it could be very fast in parties, i woud say up to 155 bpm or even more, tracks were nt played at same speed, i remember mixing with friends, usually around +4 on the mk2 and sometimes even more

i'd like to hear some of the examples of 155+ goa, I could have sworn it was quite rare to go above 145 in that sub-genre

yes agree ,i was making some goa and psy between 150 and 155 around 97 /98 cause for me and my friends it was the tempo we were used to hear it in parties but maybe we were way off...we were playing vinyl way faster than their original speed too
check artists like Rhythmystec for example, theyhave some fast tracks, maybe not 155 bpm , but the tempo of the original tracks are not a reflect of what was hapening in some parties

not sure you call that goa for me it s psy but it was mixed wih some goa tracks at that time and the tempo seems as fast as full on,also keepin mind there is Many killer underground tracks that have died cause they have never been released on cd and was not released on many examplar, the good sound of some old underground sets is almost impossible to find ,with all the cd and well known tracks of the oldschool sound we just can remind the good old days with the more comercial trance music

Paradise Connection - Portamento
Khetzal - Ganesh Pramana
Deedrah - Alien Dick
these 3 immediately come to my mind for being over 155bpm
i could list you over 100 tracks between 145 and 150, and that's only those i know the bpm of (which in total are somewhere around 350).
@pom
to me that's goa.

Yet all this diverting into speed of the track, isn't' anything to do with what makes a difference, as we get slow tracks that are Goa and not Psy. www.wizanda.comwww.soundcloud.com/wizanda
