there are so many labels around
hommega
bne
tip
domo
spirit zone
and many many more
actually i don't see the difference between the labels.
so what is the difference if an artist signs on domo, hommega or bne?
what makes a label good?
and what makes the artist choose that label?           u can find "Anything U Want" using the search...

Why GMS released this last album on Spirit Zone and not TIP ?

Becuz Spirit Zone offer them more money than TIP.           ..."Be yourself, let your conscience guide you...

More money = More Releases. more Quality Releases, to be exact. say you open a lable with 20,000 $. you need to have a studio, an office with phone lines and fax lines, and lets say you spent about 15,000$. than you decide "Ok, i want to sign some fat-ass artists for my first comp/album". you have 5,000$ at your disposal. you can either sign an artist/start a comp, which means you will need a studio to work at (for mastering the tracks or letting an artist record/master his there), AND you need to design a cover, publicize him/the comp, press a certain number of CD's, create a demand, ship them, and only THAN will you start seeing a dime or two, since five grand is hardly enough for producing an album. ask Eyal Yankovich, he surfs here, and i think he can tell you of the rigors of a striving new record label.
as for the topic at hand - i think there are many labels, each specializing with their own niech of musical genere (Iboga, MPDQX, Flying Rhino RIP, TIP). which is good, imo. diversity brings quality in to the quantity. and than you have big company records (phonokol, NMC, Hed Arzi, to name a few israeli ones, as well as many others abroad), which stand on a more diverse musical background, with years of experience, and enough money to back an artist/comp out.
the difference comes when an artist releases somthing on a certain label, and his musical style is a major factor here. i seriously doubt Iboga will take a GMS style, ultra-melodic, super-cheesy tune, as well as i doubt BNE will sign someone like Beat Bizzare. sure, there's a difference. i think it's quite obvious.

most of all the releases, but there is also design, parties ect ect

well... in most times, the label is choosing the artists.

you might say some artists influence the lables' choices, say shpongle sends a demo to BNE?           "We Do Not Allways See Things As They Are. We See Things As We Are" -Ancient Chinese Proverb

there are very distinctive differences between labels nowadays. However, i think that one could categorize the labels acording to the varied styles:

Morning Full-On:

TIP World
Agitaito
HOM-Mega
MDMA (decieced...)
SST
Phonokol
Neurobiotics
3D Vision

Night Time Prog:

Plastik Park
Spiral Trax
Medium
Domo
Tatsu
Flow

Scando Prog:

Iboga
Digital Structures
Baluns
Leviathan
Crotus
Creamcrop

Wierdo Lables:

Exogenic
Surreal Audio
Deamon Tea

Classic Labels:

TIP Records (not TIP World)
Flying Rhino
Dragonfly
Spirit Zone
Blue Room

those are the main types of labels imo, and i'm sure that 99% of the labels fall under one of these categories. You release on a label, according to style, when the big labels (naturaly) pay big money, and the small labels are the ones who discover new artists, fow les money... some of those new artists become populer, and go on to release on the big labels, in order to encrease their bank ballance...           MiniMAL cabron...

classifying labels is an obscene task.. i should know! what goes where? how can you sum up a sound? what about the classic "blue room", who were known for releasing such diversity? ambient, drum and bass, goa, techtrance, progressive, house, chill, breaks... its all there. so what is it?

some labels do have a "sound" however, like creamcrop (very nice).
