Ok, so off course you can have an idea wich VSTs are heavier and wich are more gentle on your system....

But to be more precise...is there any way to check individually how much each VST is taking off my system? Any tool to do it?

Or maybe some website or magazine article with a list that covers this issue...

There are too many vsts available, and I want to make sure I get a good combination/balance of quality and CPU usage for my system...

Sometimes its hard to buy a software to later find out that although its great, it kills your CPU after 2 inserts...

It would be really handy to have a tool that could show the CPU usage of each VST individually or at least some kind of testing list from some website or magazine...

Anyone knows of such thing?

Thanks in advance

some good some bad, usaly its not precise sience
so dont put ur attension on mem usage but good sound and how u work with this and that vst
my best advice for u... try to pick 5-6 best ones learn them by heart
plus... and this is a huge tip
when u work on vsts try to close all knobs and options and start from scrach this way it'll let u work ur way out in the cpu usage as low as it gets
since the vst dont use all options the memory opens up

another tip is try to pick those vsts that do more then one or two sound system ... such as hypersonic, sampletank 2, korg legacy

have fun! and pick ur tools carefully (lots of junk out there)

The only way I know of to measure this so far:

Right click on task bar->Task manager->Performance->CPU Usage

Make sure this is "always on top," now toggle the VSTi off and on a few times, and take the average change.

As assaf say you got some possibilitys to work with the vsts in an safe way without thats your computer will stuck or freeze (And usualy its happen in a middle of important work and then the only way its to restart again - Without the possibility of saving your work , And start the all from beginning . It will not keep your project) . Now .. You need 2 things in your computer (I work with few hardisks - So i can add in many vsts) But at the same time memo its an crucial thing for an comfortable work and better for u - Minimum 1 giga (You can also work with a 256 or 500 i dont say not but then u should close the other vsts and export the midis 1 by 1 to audio cause your computer/Producing prog will shivering to the high cpu condition and situation or in 1 word you cant work ! So use this an at last option and possibility , Just bother , redundant and unnecessary act .

Well .. All is realy dependent of what you whant to do and get . Dont think that your computer will do it to u after 2 inserts (as you wrote) But again , All about the memo and how big is your project .

Try work with an interesting vsts with an different sounds and tunes in . Take the ones with an 'seal' or an acknowledged company & corporation , As assaf say in his post there are many (Dont what to say shit in here) Around the net and they will impediment , vexing , Can make many promlems in the project and at your work and better without .

Use :

Stylus RMX
Cube
D'cota
Edirol family
Waldorf
Delta
Kontakt2
Pentagon
Fm7
Albino
Discovery
CronoX3
All the Korg family
Vanguard
Scorpion
Rhino2
Pro-53
TauPro family
Zeta

I think for the start will be enough .

There is many and good . My advice for you update your memory in and all will be fine ! .

Cheers .. !

Thanks for the help guys, but donŽt take me wrong...I wasnŽt asking wich vsts sound good and are good...I know about that and I have my choices....

I got a centrino 2.0ghz 1Gg Ram, its not like Im strugling like a madman to get a track done....

The only thing Ive noticed is that some inserts are far heavier than others, and sometimes this heavier one is not better than the other...

and it would definetelly handy for me to have a table with some test results or some way to check CPU usage % for each vst individuAlly...just a cool gadget to have but maybe im asking too much

Sometimes Im in the middle of a project and it starts crashing so I have to either bounce or compromize in order to continue to flow...I know...we all do...but im a bit of a technical guy and I like to know the numbers behind it

Ok..maybe two inserts is exagerate heheh but im a bit of a FX freak (mainly fx because vsti i export always) what can I do? Wait for computers to be even 10 times faster! No..but wait...plugins will be 10x heavier by then! heheh its a cyclic race....

well i was just curious...i supose there no such tool then...it has to be measured assaf_zoŽs way...I was just hoping some magazine or something maybe had already done such tests and would have a "nice shiny already made table for us" hehehe

thanks for the help

maybe not a very handy solution, but still a solution

buzz or psycle. both feature a neat cpu monitor that lists every thread. in buzz you could simply try your heavy cpu presets in your favourite vst. load that vst into polacs vst loader. buzz is awesome by the way, also for vst.

/me wonders why thousand buck software haven't got something like this incorporated. I smell something fishy           soundcloud.com/epsylohm
