if u look into the dancing music history, guy, you'll not much except 1/4's 4/4: march, polka, russian folklore, english folklore, etc. african tribal etc.
another thing - 3/4: [wals] was also ok, and it has been used in trance by many(XV Kilist, and so on)
other beats were used, but not for dancing.
so i think 7/8 or 4/5 are good for breaks or transitions from 1 story to other ... sorry, but human ear/body needs to hear 4/4 :-) we're used to it for very very long time
now.... if we do create something in 5/5 or 7/7 it may sound outstanding! but it won't be possible to be dancing with it.

Seems like we'll have to inject our brain the 7/8 4/5 3/4 beat. there's no other way to get used to it :)

My beats: * 4/4s - The standard beat (in every trance)! * 3/4s - I did this beat (worked good):)
It's cool to change the beats:) |

3/4 works pretty good as the 6/8 also Simon tracks and others used them
I used them long time ago and they just sound very well. |

4/4 is easy to work with, and VERY easy to hear.
3/4 is easy to work with, and less easy to hear.
4/3 is less easy to work with, and even less easy to hear (but can be impressive... I think he used it in one of the tracks in The Lone Deranger, forget the name), and is much easier to work with when NOT making trance, because it scores lower on the rhythm scale.
7/8 is pretty simple to work with but confusing to hear as trance (doesn't really work well with basic rhythms, which is what people will dance to). Much better used in rock IMHO :)
5/4 is hard to work with (I've tried and failed to make something I like in trance, it's pretty groovy for ambient though).
there's of course combining 3/4 and 4/3 (it will require tempo shifting to be smooth), which I've promised myself to try sometime :)
Anyways, you could go on a more standard point of view, and just listen to a lot of rock, where the drumming combines 8/8 and 7/8, or lots of other combinations...
but for dancing, lets admit it... 4/4 and 8/8 are the best, and 3/4 and 6/8 in second, the rest a far third. The more complex rhythms can be WAY trippier, but psytrance is about dancing first, psychedelia second, and all the rest takes up the other places. Want to freak everyone out with your rhythms? Hear Shpongle - Are You Shpongled, and see how it's done =) |

the first Shpongle has a 7/8 track and simon has a 3/4 in The Lone Deranger. thats all true. u misunderstood my question (or i misasked). I KNOW beat. i am also a bit of percusionist so i know my way around (ever tryed to drum to 9/11s?). my question is - if u ever tryed making trance in a diffrent beat - what was the groove u created? where did u put the bass drums? whats the bass line u used? I keep tweaking with it and it sounds nice but I'm still looking for a GROOVE.

Forget about it, try adding electronic violins. I heard them in jazz and I wished I could hear them in a track... |

in music there is a beat structure
at the most upper level there are bars when you say 4/4 (4 divide by 4)
the denominator (mechane) means the weight and "tempo" of the music.
while the numerator (mone) counts how many actual beats you play in each bar
weight - which beats get a dagesh...
ie - in old dance music like valse the tempo was 3/4 or 6/8 altough in math they both represent the same "length" of a bar, in music the 3/4 means a dagesh of the first beat in each bar TOOM tam tam, TOOM tam tam .....
and 6/8 means TOom taM Tam TOom taM Tam so other sounds get the dagesh
of course valse sucks very much
except for one valse that I cant remember its name now (its a piece that is regarded as a valse but its plain wierd and beutiful)
in trance and almost any other dance music in the known universe the tempo is 4/4 which means four beats in a bar
TOOM tam Tam tam, TOOM tam Tam tam...
anyway thats the basics of the tempo /weight thing
bom yaniv
