I think i read the same article as you, PoM..
I personally dont think it is that important. But then again i havnt tried a serious high end DI box. I've tried with my Summit Audio preamp, wich has a Hi-z input and im not quite shure if the differnce is worth the money you need to spent.
It seemed like the signal through the DI apeared louder (about 1db) than the signal going through my mixer. But the signals had the same volume.
Thats a good thing but im not shure i made the test right.
Must make a more thorough test.

i read a other one and if i understand well ,the enginner make a test using a di and then go in the mic pre of the console for the left chanel and then for the right chanel of the synth ,he only connected the output in the line in of the consol and the sound was better using the di(it was missing neer one octave in the low end he say and definition , punch...)but i read some di are colored...

Remember that most users on this forum are, well not newbies, but not that technical or advanced users with tons of experience and highend gear. So using and experimenting with DI's is not that commen here.

If you ask or do a search about DI on gearslutz.com you will get tons of replies and matches.
And i bet 90% of them will tell you that a DI is always a good idea with instruments however they are not that synth minded as we are so it is kindoff an unexplored area.

Making a DI test is on my to do list.
Also a cheap vs highend cable test (i just got my roll of 100meter Mogami cable. Wohoo!
