i've just bought a Yamaha TX81Z (little rack-mounted 4-operator FM synth) can't wait to get into chunky bass sounds and weird atmospheric wibbles!

lovely, isn't it? i've only just hooked mine up and it's absolute bliss...

i'm sure you've got one already, but there are a couple of really useful freeware editors out there (i'm on PC, but i'm sure i've seen a Mac one too!).           http://www.myspace.com/aeonaeon

Hi there man, what do you mean by freeware editors? Is it something for the Lexicon or?
The lexicon is a very good fx box and very worth it for it's price now It has a much better sound than any vst plugins reverb available for sure...

Thanks

Now way you can't compare the Altiverb to an MPX1 it's completely different sound...If you want to say that you feel that software is as good as hardware it's your opinion but for me there is nothing that sounds better and fatter than outboards...They are the best sound you can get and that's why they cost a lot of money

Is it really that black and white?

The Lexicon unit is digital. I have one. It can be replicated in Logic's Space designer. In fact it has presets from Lexicon already. They sound the same.

Software doesn't quite sound like analogue gear but digital is digital.

I would dare to refine this statement and say that software on pc cant sound as good as analogue but if u have enough dsp power it can sound the same and even better..
If Wendy Carlos, one of first who used Minimoog and first to bring synthesizer to public could say something similar than I who dont know nothing can afford to say that too..

digital is digital, but algorithms are not the same... I promise you a PCM96 or Bricasti M7 sounds way beter than any "software" reverb Ive encountered...

I sincerly hope that will not be the case. But since money talk and plastic and dsp-engines are shithot and cheap you're prolly right :S

I know that hardware is better i have tried everything from all modern softwares to many modern hardware too and yes you do get good sound from the software example Omnisphere is amazing sound but then compare it to a Prophet 5 passing through a Lexicon reverb for example and you will feel the difference i am talking about...If you say that logic space designer makes the sound of a lexicon i disagree i have both of these reverbs both are good in there own ways but i tend to use much more the hardware because of it's nice fat sound

Hope this helps ...

Me too. And not only is the quality of the reverbs on space designer just as good, space designer is far more flexible and you can have many instances of space designer in an arrangement.

If you wanna talk about hardware reverbs that are yet to be matched from software ones, then talk about the bottom silver unit on the picture of one of my racks, the Eventide Eclipse.
But nothing that can't be achieved with IR software reverbs that have "sampled" the algorithm.

I used to swear by my Lexicon MPX-1 back in 2003. But software reverbs have come a long way since then.

for me, the Lexicon is way ahead of any software i have used. having used it for a month now, it wipes the floor with the Sony Oxford reverb, particularly on long tailed reverbs and short ambiences. but there are a few things to consider:

firstly, yeah, placebo is important. i paid good money for a nice shiny outboard reverb. of course i subconsciously expect it to sound much better!

secondly, i am convinced that a lot of the positive qualities attributed to hardware come from an extra analogue gain stage. i think this often affect people's feeling about sound.

finally, you have to remember that this is a dedicated reverb DSP box programmed by the people who invented digital reverb. of course it's going to sound fucking good!

yes, it is free editor software for the MPX-1... you just connect midi in + midi out, set your Lexicon to receive midi, then it communicates with your computer via SysEx.

this means you can use mouse & computer to program the Lexicon rather than going through those menus i find it much easier! check it out:
