If you are on lsd or whatever makes you trip balls, what kind of sounds make you trip balls, structures, moods, scales.

this is not confined to psytrance nor any specific genre, i just want to know what makes YOU trip balls, cause what makes me trip may not make you trip at all, so the question is, what is psychedelia? (in your own words remember)           yo quiero taco

For me, psychedelia is something that is interesting.. anything that does something curious and evolving.

Therefor psychedelia is in everything and everywhere, the psychedelic drug is just a remainder of this.           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz

well hmm, funny you should mention. i was just kicking back listening to a bunch of my old tunes last night.. it was late and i was in a very relaxed mindset.. and when i stared at the dimly lit ceiling and focused hard on each sound and rhythm in the music, all of what i saw warped slightly and made morphing shapes in accordance with what i felt about the music.. this doesn't normally happen to me sober, so i was pleasantly surprised. at one point the ceiling formed a lattice of ever shifting, interlocking patterns.. delicate and beautiful... forming the gateway between my consciousness and the world.
not to rant..
but i think my definition of psychadelic music is anything that is conducive to that sort of emotional state. it could be trance, house, drum n bass, rock, singing, drumming, almost anything can fit the definition.

We need more threads like this in the isratrance production board. I could wax poetic about this subject for ages, but I'll stick to what makes music psychedelic.

Any music where the listening experience is sufficiently created in the mind of the individual (as opposed to merely being experienced there) can qualify as psychedelic. That is to say, if the music gives your mind fuel to create emotional states, spur synaesthetic episodes, paint images in your head, evoke memories or ideas, it is "mind-manifesting" - literally, psychedelia.

Music is an auditory experience, but when your mind becomes part of the feeback loop, it is also a psychedelic experience. This can occur if the music is not, per se, particularly trippy. But some artists focus specifically on creating music that is indeed not only likely to produce this experience, but tailored to do it with exquisite precision (that's us, folks). We do this in a variety of ways:

- creating timbres and timbral variations that the mind does not know or recognizes, thereby "liberating us ostensibly from our ordinary senses [and preconceptions, etc]," as is defined as psychedelic.

- creating soundscapes using echoes and reverbs that the brain recognizes as impossible or otherworldy, again bringing the mind away from "normal" everyday experience.

- chord progressions, scales, melodies, and rhythms that induce trance-like states. This does not only apply to our brand of trance, but to all psychedelic music. This is also part of the reason many people find ethnic music stimulating in this way - the structure, motif, and nuances are flavoured with the exotic and unknown.

The psychedelic greats such as Pink Floyd used all of these techniques long before psytrance was around. And our technology has only improved, as has the opportunity to create and share music freely. I stopped making much psytrance because the rhythms themselves ceased to be condusive to my mind having otherworldy experience - I found I could toy with people's heads far more using broken beats and in-your-face timbre-shifting bass (shameless plug to go check out my soundcloud). But I will always aim to keep it it psychedelic to the core - because really, music is so much more interesting when you aim to create a whole new world in each and every listener's mind.

Peace!

An example that will make things a lot easier to explain, as words are not enough to accurately describe music that makes me trip:

Anything that is CLEVER

In a way that it makes me think it was designed to provoque a certain thought process.

Mental toys. Comprende? Any sound or sequence of sounds that is not only earcandy but a mental object that my mind can grab and connect to in different ammusing, surprising ways.

Illusions, tricks, and wise use of sonic narrative to enhance the natural drama of the psychedelic experience in which the world is experienced from such a high state of consciousness.
