Anyone here has Dell and has this problem? I've read that it is problem with grounding. I have read that a three to two prong wall outlet adapter will eliminate the problem, but it is a bit dangerous. Can anyone tell me the dangers associated with this? Anyone found a cheap and safe solution?

I had electrical hum sound also after connecting my console, monitors, synth and computer to the same outlet.
To solve this I ungrounded the console - hum was over.
It is dangerous and you should check with somebody who did this with Dell.

It is due to a ground loop and there is two ways of dealing with it.
The hard and correct way of sanitizing the power and finding the source of the loop.
It requires expert knowledge about electricity and even then it's not easy to do.
The other is the illegal, dangerous and standard practice of dissconnecting the earth

Has anyone tried anything like this? It looks more safe that the three to two prong adapter.

That Ebtech HUMX Voltage Hum Filter, is it a three to two prong adapter, or is it different?
Thank god my problem is not that big. The peculiar thing is that when I turn the volume up from RME's virtual mixer the noise remains the same. But when I turn the speakers volume directly it becomes louder.
Does this thing get recorded as well? |

you can get hum in your audio path, not just because of a ground loop. it can happen when the audio cables are low quality and live near the power cables. just to make sure you don't have that, use good quality shilded cables, preferably XLR. make sure you have all your rig hooked to the same outlet.

The danger of using a 3 to 2 prong adater is that your case is no longer grounded. If for any reason a power lead come in contact with the casing of your device, it will transfer electricity...meaning you touch it & your getting fried. Normally, this doesnt hapen, but if something was damaged or noced around, it could happen.
I also believe it maes your component unable to ground a static charge (socks on carpet anyone). Static electricity can damage your components over time, meaning it may not effect it now, but each time it happens, it damages it a little bit.
The hum eliminators works- I have one. European AC power works on a different frequency I've been told, so you may want to chec if you need something different. The hum eliminator gets rid of the 60 HZ ground loop. It can be a pain, since each audio channel jacked in needs one! I tend to just run on battery most of the time, and will plug it in with the 3 to 2 prong adapter if I have no alternative.

Although also a bit dodgy, but still better then just disconnecting the ground can be to provide separate ground for the unearthed machine.
That would mean to connect a separate cable to some grounded metal object (usually a radiator, but you could of course stick a metal pole in the ground yourself to connect to).
Again, dodgy and illegal and if you can sort it with hum-eliminators that would be very good of course.
I sure would not like to have a permanently un-earthed chassi for my puter.

HEY! I FIXED IT! (after buying a hum eliminator that doesn't work, reading about 300 articles, sending e-mails to several shops that sell audio equipment)
Seems like I wasn't using balnced cables after all. I bought two and once I plugged them, problem solved!
TIP:HOW TO CHECK IF YOUR CABLES ARE BALANCED OR UNBALANCED.
On the connector (the part of the cable that goes in the soundcard) you will see that it has either one or two black (blue, green yellow or any other colour) lines.
IF IT HAS ONE LINE IT IS UNBALANCED
IF IT HAS TWO LINES IT IS BALANCED

Usally when using balanced output you'll get a line level of +4db which is the profossional standard. Using unbalanced will get you -10db which is the consumer standard.
