Toshiba has no xp drivers for their recent models so toshiba its not a chance...mi chances are vaio,hp or dell, but after what i've read from dell im not so sure.

What i like about the inspiron 1720 is that for 1300 usd id get a 17" inch screen,core2duo 2.2,160 hard drive 7200rpm and i can downgrade it to xp, so for that price i cannot get something better here in mexico but saving money and having issues with power suply, noisy internal fan and firewire issues is not so convincing. So again im lost (if i had money enough for macbookpro i wouldnt)

Brain Hacked, if it makes you feel better i never had any firewire issues with any of the Dell laptops i had.

I've used the following firewire interfaces with them: M-Audio Firewire audiophile, Presonus Firebox & RME Fireface 400. All of them worked well.

I would suggest getting a 1520 instead, slightly cheaper & easier to lug around to gigs & stuff.

I haven't used the new inspiron series but the older one's never had any noisy fans. In fact i'm typing on a Inspiron 630m right now & i usually leave it on all day & it's always quiet.

P.S. I've sold three of my friends my old Dell laptops & they're all working fine now even after two years. The 630m i'm using right now has been working flawlessly for 3 years. Hope this helps you.          http://www.soundcloud.com/getafixmusic

I have a 1730 and I am very happy with it.

Very quiet, stable, I run vista with 3 gb ram,and for production i can recommened it.
But before buying check if there is no cpu-whine( that's a very strange high pitched noice, comes from the motherboard(google for it)

Good luck

I'm not sure about that. What interface do you have or are planning to get? The best bet would be to ask the manufacturers if it supports whatever chipset the new inspiron series have.           http://www.soundcloud.com/getafixmusic

The firewire port cannot really be replaced, but it can be supplimented by getting a pcmcia or pc express 54 firewire card (depending on what type of pc card slot you've got...I actually recommend getting a laptop with the older pcmcia).

Given your options, not question I would buy the dell over an hp or viao.
